Timing and Firing Orders

On the fox body 89-93 there will be a grey chip on the harness to the distributor usually on the drivers side of it. Pull that out and you can begin timing. With that pulled anywhere between 0* and 12* is safe. You can time up to 17* but higher octane fuel is recommended. After timing, plug in the chip. This chip works as an advance based off the information sent to the ecu from the sensors.

vacuum lines,there are three one for each petcock and one for the vacuum advance, the two for the petcocks go to the carb boots, one on each side,and the one for the vacuum advance goes directly to the no. two carb.

Standing in front of the truck looking at the distributor #1 on the cap would be at the 6 O'Clock position, from there clockwise would be 1, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The cylinders on the drivers side from front to back are 1, 3, and 5. Passenger side front to back would be 2, 4, and 6.

this is demand's info on this subject, first check to see if you smell fuel in the engine bay area "over valve cover".if yes this means the fuel is not being burned by the spark plugs....now if you have an extra coil wire for your vehicle "if not you can get 1 at your nearest junkyard" change your coil wire with the spare one....try to start the car,if it starts great..u found the problem.......if the car still does not start ,then put back your original coil wire ....now start your car again listen to the sound while trying to start if its popping or backfiring then you are getting spark to your plugs and the distributor needs ignition timing...located on crank pulley line up white lines "btdc +10 degrees" make sure at this mark your rotor in the distrubitor is pointing directly at the number 1 spark plug connector located on distrubitor.you will need white out to make markings to help and you will need to loosen the bolts on the distrubitor while you twist the distrubitor to get the rotor to point directly at the number 1 plug connector....once done try to start your vehicle....if still no start then you will need to take your vehicle to a an auto mechanic.........

Ford did not produce a 460 in 1979.

In 1978 the firing order for a 460 is 1-5-4-6-6-3-7-8.

The only way to set the timing is with a OBDII engine scanner. You CANNOT use a timing light. The timing is computor controlled.

Engine stopped suddenly without warning and will not start. This is an interference engine and if the belt broke you will have internal engine damage. Belt should have been replaced at 105,000 miles. If you have less than 105,000 miles it more than likely is not a broken belt. Remove the distributor cap and tun the engine over. If the rotor does not turn the belt may be broken.

You will need power converter/circuit protector. Any vehicle that has amber turn signals require one of these. Go to Wal-mart or any auto parts store and they should have what you need. There are different ones for differrent makes and models. There are also "generic" ones out there but require a working knowledge of your vehicles wiring.

If the drive belt needs replacing it could also send the engine out of sync. Stand on the passengers side of the engine next to the wheel. Look down below the alternator & 6" towards the front, U'll see the belt tensioner. It's the slanted 'bar' with a pulley on each end. The lower pulley on the tensioner has 2 marks about an inch apart where the 2 halves of that pulley bolt together. On the other half of the same pulley u'll see 1 mark. U may need a flash light & some papertowels to clean off the marks. The single mark HAS TO BE IN BETWEEN the 2 marks on the opposite side. If the single mark is alot more to either of the 2 marks opposite it u need a new drive belt. To change the drive belt, put a 3/8 ratchet head into the squared hole in the upper pulley from where the 'marks' are. Then push the ratch handle towards the windshield & u'll see the drivebelt loosen. You can put a pipe on the ratch handle to extend it & give more leverage. Then put the new drivebelt on the same way u took the old 1 off.
