How do you remove an automatic transmission from a 1997 Nissan Altima?
the motor and trans must be lowered thru the bottom of the car. repair manual goes into detail . it took me 10 hours to complete with new motor install. remove all wireing harness assemblies and label.remove cover plate on bottom of bellhouseing ,this gives access to 4 bolts connecting the torque converter . turn crankshaft pully to rotate and access all 4 bolts.remove bellhouseing bolts and pull motor from trans. almost everything under the hood has to be taken apart and disambled.get the book! radiator, exhaust, motor mounts, altranator.powersterring ,wireing harness,cv half shafts. lower the motor with a cycle lift and jack the car up, block and pull the motor and trans out to disassemble. bag and label all bolts tag and label all parts and wire connections. most shops charge 600. bucks to do this and its well worth the money. this is a big job
You DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE. The transmission can be removed by itself .
1986 iroc 305 5.0 that wont shift into 3rd what could be wrong?
low line pressure. take it to a transmission shop have the system flushed.(cooler, lines, transmission) new filter and fluid. tranny shop may also recommend a rebuild/replacement.
Assuming this is an auto box, check the fluid level first. After that check the fluid filter and pump. Then the brake bands. Then the torque converter. If a manual box it's either the layshaft bearings or synchro cones. A transmission shop will tell you for sure.

but it normally reoccurs again
What should you do with a D4 transmiton gear light flashing?
If the D4 transmission gear light is flashing, it typically indicates a problem with the transmission system. First, check the transmission fluid level and condition, as low or dirty fluid can cause issues. If the fluid is fine, it’s advisable to consult the vehicle's manual for specific guidance and seek professional diagnostic help, as continued driving could lead to further damage. Avoid driving the vehicle until the issue is resolved to prevent potential transmission failure.

Change Your Mind, Not Your Oil.
Use the First In Synthetic Motor Oil's.
See My Bio For more information. If the transmission is leaking and it won't shift, try checking the transmission pan and filter. They might not have replaced the gasket or filter.
I don't know! Ask a mechanic or something.

It sounds like your plug wires are grounded to the engine block. IE.... melted somehwere along the exhaust route and grounded, noticeable when you put it in gear......
I don't think so, i have a 1993 cavalier 2.2L auto, which does the same thing, i put new plug wires on it about a month ago, and it still has the same vibration.
I would check your motor mounts. I had a 90 Sunbird and now have a 91 Cavalier, both of which had this problem. When you pull up to a stop light the whole car vibrates rather aggressively, but is calmed when the car is put into park or neutral. In both cars the motor mounts were bad causing the motor to jostle inside the engine compartment, but when you are actually driving the engine is torqued against the mounts and ceases to rattle. On the 2.2 there are 4 mounts, Right Front (by the engine coolant overflow tank), Right Rear (right above the trans axle), Left Front (looks like a dog bone on the bottom by the radiator) and the transmission mount (on top on the left by the wheel well).
Last night I replaced the right front and right rear and this solved my problem.
