What is the best way to provide additional insulation on exterior walls in an older homemade of cinder block with exterior brick veneer?

My neighbor who has a vintage 1962 house got storm windows and insulated the roof. Others went with double and triple paned windows. If you have a tile floor, it will be cooler in the house, too. Carpeting some of the living areas will help. Probably the walls are fine and don't need upgrading.

If you want to do walls go spray foam, higher rating than any other insulation. Also keeps bats, hornets, and other critters out of walls (often a problem in older homes). Be sure to get several quotes. Prices can very drastically.

Is it safe to use Peak Long Life antifreeze in a 1997 Volkswagen VW Jetta?

According to the Bentley service manual covering the 1997 Volkwagen Jetta GL (Special:Booksources), these Jettas ship from the Volkswagen factory with red G12, a "phosphate-free and also silicate-free" coolant (page 0-16).

Peak's Long Life coolant "features a phosphate-free and silicate-free formula". Furthermore, combining Long Life with G12 "will not change the current antifreeze color." I've been topping off the red G12 coolant on my 1997 Jetta for two months now. The color of the coolant is still red, and using a hydrometer to test the coolant hasn't revealed anything abnormal, like foamy deposits or dirt fragments.

Where does a flasher go on a 1989 Ford Festiva?

I'm not sure on the 89 but on the 1990 model its up behind the computer by the left front firewall inside the car. Don't look for a typical flasher because it looks like a square relay. Check the one with three wires leading to it. Before you change it though just give it a couple of taps with your finger and it may start working again. I know mine did. Hope this helps you out. The AC drain is located on the firewall just behind the exhaust manifold. There is a flap cut into the heat shield (silvery, metallic stuff). You'll need a small flat blade screw driver to carefully lift the flap.

Why will shifter knob on 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme not shift from park have to remove knob to push down shaft to shift?

Generally, if the button on the shifter does not go in, there is a build-up of dirt and debris in the mechanism causing it not to move. A good amount of WD-40 or other lubricant usually helps the problem. If not, there is a good chance that the connector pin in the mechanism is either popped out or broken.

How many relay switches are there on a 2000 Olds- Alero?

It would depend on which accessories are on the vehicle. If you get in the box located by the firewall on the drivers side the inside of the lid should have a legend as to which relays operate which accessories. There will also be several fuses located in that box (along with the drivers and passengers side fuse panels on each side of the dash). Hope this helps.

How do you repair the glove box lock on a 1997 Jetta?

My glove box latch handle fell off about a month ago. The latching pins had loosened and let the handle fall out. I couldn't figure out how to push them back into place without replacing the whole glove box door. And after reading the FYI, I knew I didnt want to do that.

Today I just fixed it. Took an hour and cost me $2.00 Canadian dollars...

The problem is that the factory pins are too short to push in when the handle is in place. If they were a bunch longer you could push them in through the spaces between the latch and the glove box door.

I bought 2 feet of 1/8" steel rod stock (from home depot). The original pins are metric and are smaller diameter, so you need to drillout the holes in the handle to 1/8" to take the new pins.

You don't need to drill the pin seats in the glove box door (not that I think its possible anyway); the 1/8" stock is just slightly bigger and can be pushed in with a bit of force (twisting them helps). A tight fit here is really good anyway, since the metric pins came loose by themselves in the first place. I will let you know if it breaks at -40 this winter....

In this pic you can see the smaller pins in the middle and the new pins to the left. I first pushed the original pin in the hole and marked the depth with some tape to match. You can just see the tape mark on the original pin. If you look at the drill bit, you will see some wire insulation I put over it so that the new holes would only be drilled as deep as the old ones.

Here you can see the point to all this. The pins are now long enough to push in from the hole between the handle and the glove box door. You need to insert the pins from the center space where the handle goes, and push the pins outward to positions shown.

This picture almost shows the pin end in the slot. I used a pen knife blade to engage the pins. They only go in a few mm. It also helps to move the handle open and closed slightly while pushing the pin.

Oh by the way, since this was experiemental (on may car anyway, I forgot to measure the pins before I put it together. But you can see from the picture what the ball park is. Dont forget that once its together, it ain't coming apart, so test fit everything before installing.

Good luck and have fun...

On most cars a gasket is required along with the RTV sealant. A new gasket should have come with the water pump. Ask the parts house where you purchased the part.
