Car Stalling Problems

When your car’s engine stops when it’s in idle or is accelerating, then your car has stalled. Almost all stalling problems stem from poor fuel-gas mixture, out-of-tune fuel injection or fuel contaminants.

2,010 Questions

Your car is sputtering when you try to accelerate and it also dies when it ildles for too long can someone tell you what you need to fix or replace?

This is happening to my car right now and Im just getting the car idling fixed. It can't be for sure, but your car may need the idling checked.

If a 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood stalled while driving and would not start again but started the next day what could be wrong?

i have a 94 cad fleet does the same thing have changed the distriuter and coil and it still does it iam at loss will never by again unreliable

1993 mercury tracer lost power after fuel cut off light came on?

Tracer has fuel cut off relay and a sensor which triggers it if the vehicle is in a crash. However these sensors can be triggered by just a hard bump in a parking lot or even lowering fast from a lift. Reset button is in trunk on right wheel well cover. Just press and you're good to go!

No spark condition 1993 geo storm?

If you have no spark, you would likely have a problem with the magnito (ignition).

Why does your 2005 Dodge Durango stall when driving?

I don't have an answer, but my 2005 Durango does the same thing. Always when decelerating, and when slowing down to turn (if it's going to do it). I have found several links online concerning the Automatic Transmission Control Module. But, there has been no resolution to the problem. My vehicle always starts right back up. But, it's annoying.

Would the crankshaft sensor for a 1995 Buick Skylark make it buck and stall out?

If it does, let me know. I have a 1995 Skylark GS, and sometimes it will have it's engine speed fluctuate, usually after it's warmed-up. It could be a cracked PCV pipe, the EGR valve or the MAP sensor. I replaced all of these and even put in a new battery and a new alternator (from Bosch - works great), and I haven't had the car conk-out again. Only that bit about the engine speed fluctuating. Also, check for a water leak that gets through the firewall and onto the passenger-side carpet. I tried everything I could to fix this but I just stuff a towel under there at the firewall and change it after washing the car.

When you step on the gas you hear a knocking sound in the engine what could it be?

It's probably ignition timing or low octane fuel. It COULD be something far more serious though, such as rod bearings.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse?

The fuel filter and fuel pump for a 3g Eclipse is located under the rear seat. You should see a panel near the center. Make sure you take the gas cap off first before you open it as to relieve pressure from the tank otherwise you'll.....well you can imagine the outcome. The pump and the filter is connected to the pump assembly and its kind of a pain to remove the pump. Good Luck!

Why will a 2004 dodge Intrepid not start after driving a short while?

Have a 98 2.7 litre that would do that. Before doing anything else, replace ASD relay in engine compartment fuse block (diy $12). Would start fine cold, but often would not start after shutting off when engine was warm. Had to wait until engine compartement cooled off. Was getting fuel but no spark.

Why is your 1991 blazer losing power when you push on the gas?

Is this a full size (K) Blazer or a compact (S/T) Blazer?

I am going to assume full size. If you have a compact, ignore the next two paragraphs.

The most likely thing to cause a power loss under load on this vehicle is a restricted exhaust system. The most likely cause of restricted exhaust is a broken catalyst. Bang on the cat with your hand or a rubber hammer and if it makes a rattle or clunk, you need to replace the cat and the rest of the exhaust back to the tailpipe.

If you have a 305 (Chevrolet 5.0) suspect a worn cam. Perform a running compression test. If results vary excessively from cylinder to cylinder or are low, especially at RPM above 2000, expect that the lobes of your cam are worn. Replace the cam and the lifters, and inspect all pushrods very closely (at least one will be bent) or replace all pushrods also. You can check for a bent pushrod by rolling it on a good flat surface.

If the above isn't the problem:

Most likely, you have high secondary ignition resistance caused by eroded spark plugs or cooked wires. Does it shake when it's losing power? If so, then a tune-up should help. Note that replacing just the spark plugs is not a tune-up.

If there's no shaking involved, expect a fuel metering and delivery problem of some sort or restricted exhaust. Note that with significantly restricted exhaust, you can expect to see manifold vacuum decrease more than 25% as you raise the engine speed from idle to 2500RPM in neutral.

If it's a fuel delivery problem, you should have a check engine light on with lean codes after you get the engine to bog down for a few seconds. You could have inadequate fuel supply due to a bad pump or clogged filter. You can check this with a fuel pressure gauge. Check to see if the pressure drops when the power loss occurs. A drop of 3 psi is enough to indicate a problem.

You can also have insufficient fuel delivery caused by a bad sensor or an injector problem. Injector problems are less likely than sensor problems. Specifically relating to power loss when you press on the gas, the sensors most likely to case this are the TPS and the MAP sensor. There is also the possibility that the problem doesn't relate so much to how far you press the accelerator pedal as to the engine RPM. If you romp on it, does it first respond normally and then after a moment lose power and bog down, possibly shaking (or not)? If so, you might have a weak ignition coil (you can test it with an ohm-meter or by replacing it) or you might have a worn distributor bushing. If you remove the distributor cap and try to 'wiggle' the rotor, it shouldn't move much. If it does, the distributor should be rebuilt or replaced.

Your 1995 Nissan Maxima just started to occasionally stall at stop lights and now it stalls everytime you put it in reverse any reasons why?

Have you ever checked the air intake boot, that goes from your air filter, directly to your engine? It's a short, large ribbed hose that's rubber, but it's probably as hard as a tire now from age. Check between the ribbing on the hose to see if there's any holes or deterioration in the intake boot. Also, check to make sure that all the clamps on the boot (and all other hoses coming from the air filter, into the engine) are very tight and fully secure. If you do have any holes or deterioration in the air intake boot, then you can simply apply A LOT of auto duct tape around the entire boot (ribbed hose), until no air is able to escape or entire the boot. When I say A LOT of duct tape, I mean to duct tape the he!! out of it. If you don't want a duct-taped, yet functional air intake boot under your hood, then you can order a new one. I did this to a 1995 Nissan Maxima that had the same exact symptoms listed in your question & it works fine to this day.

Hope this helps... & Good Luck.

Why does my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l cut off while driving?

Need more info. Does it restart, how and when? You have to do some detective work to determine if you are losing spark or fuel. If the check engine light has or is illuminated check for DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes). Re-post your findings.

What would cause your Dodge pickup with an automatic transmission to stall when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear?

The real problem is manually shifting from gear to gear with an automatic transmission.

If you are referring to the automatic upshift, there may be a problem with the EGR system or vacuum system.

Why does my car's battery die when i am idled?

Sounds like it could be a bad alternator, but I can't be sure based only on the question.

Can also be a loose alternator drive belt.

1988 Lincoln town car stalls at low rpm Why?

I could be wrong but it may be the same problem I had with my 86 Lincoln town car, it's a factory defect. A hose to be more specifically, if you take it to any Lincoln or ford dealer they should be able to order you the hose and it'll be fixed.hope this helps!

What is wrong with your car if it drives good but when it comes to a stop on a red light it turns off?

Plugged fuel filter. Plugged PVC valve. Plugged air cleaner. Any or all of the above.

I would suggest looking for a cracked vacuum hose, which is a common cause of a stall at idle..

How will diesel effect a petrol engine?

It won't really hurt the engine.... unless you run it long term... Unfortunately you can't burn diesel well in a petrol engine.... It will smoke alot and miss and have weak power... best thing to do if it was accidental is to top it off with petrol... and when it is half tank... top it off again.... then change the fuel filter.

Another idea is to add a double dose of octane booster.... it should help with the smoking and missing

Would a bad connection on the battery make your ruck bog down?

bad connection, less current to computer? mis information almost as if a bulb in a bad light switch works when it wants to

What is a bronco?

A Bronco is wild horse that is usually white, unlike a stallion which is a wild black horse

A Bronco is a horse which is not fully trained to the saddle, or one that habitually bucks. They can be feral (wild) or domesticated. The term Bronco has nothing to do with the color of the horse.

How do you replace the gaskets on intake manifold for 2002 suburban?

To replace the Suburban manifold gaskets, unhook everything on the manifold, from fuel lines to vacuum hoses. The manifold needs to be unbolted then removed. Clean the old gasket material, then install with a new gasket. Make sure to use factory specs when torqueing down the bolts.

Why does your Mercedes 380 SL flood all 8 sparkplugs?

Too rich of a fuel mixture, or you're not getting enough spark. If you have a MAF and o2 sensor, replace them... Check your coil or coil packs, they might not be putting out enough juice to burn the fuel evenly and completely. Get rid of the mercedes... It's a toilet!
