Trouble code P0171 means :System too lean (bank 1)

Remove the Fuse for Fuel Injection for a few seconds. The fuses are located under the cover in the centre of the dash. The Release for the cover is just under the trailing edge, above the radio/heater controls, of the cover. On my '95 the fuel injector/EMC (computer) fuse is near the right rear of fuse area. Note: There's a nice diagram on the underside of the dash cover panel that you just removed.

there are many components that will display the check engine light if they are faulty. Go to a local mechanic and have them scan the computer. They will display the component that is faulty.

this comes right from the service manual: The SERVICE (wrench) telltale is turned on by the cluster when it receives a command from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Body Control Module (BCM), or the Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM), the PCM or BCM will turn the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale on for all Non-emission related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that require that a telltale be turned on.

The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale will also be turned on if the EBTCM has detected a fault in its own warning indicator system. if the Antilock Braking System (ABS) system cannot turn its own telltale, a message will be sent to the cluster to turn on the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale

The SERVICE(Wrench) telltale will be displayed for 2-3 seconds during startup for bulb check purposes.

An obdII code reader will tell you why the light is on and might tell you what is wrong

Remove the positive terminal on the battery for 20-30 minutes and then replace the terminal on the battery and tighten the bolt very well. Also, for battery acid build-up on the terminals, pour several cups of boiling water over the battery terminals.

You will need a computer scanner to read these codes, then a book or other source to determine what the codes mean Go to your local public library and see if they have a repair manual (Haynes or Chilton) for your vehicle available for checkout. OBDII system that requires a scanning tool to retrieve the trouble codes became mandatory in 1995. Prior to then, codes could be retrieved manually. If manual retrieval is available for your vehicle, the manual will instruct how to retrieve the codes and tell you what each code means. Another option would be to have the computer scanned at an auto parts store that scans as a free service.

engine misfiring can be several things. first check plugs and wires. next check timing belt may have jumped a tooth or worse worn to the point it is about to break. Obviously check gas for water in tank. Especially if you like to run tank very low before putting in more gas. What happens in this case is condensation forms on inside of tank and forms in bottom of tank. Does misfiring only happen when tank gets to a certain level? but filling up and it goes away? suspect water in tank.misfiring can be as simple as way past due for tune up ,fuel filter, bad plug wire.You did not say what the engine size and if it had a distrubutor or was distributorless.If it has distributor then look at cap and rotor button. If distributorless could be cam or crank sensors acting up. But remember keep it simple, if you have not given it a tune up in a long while start there, 90 % of the time that fixes it.

I owned a 98 Rodeo that caused similar issue...my mechanic suggested it was the indication that the transmission nearing it's end...

replace your gas cap first - cheepest try. i had a crack in a vacuum hose that made it keep coming on. You have an emssions problem of some sort. It may be the gas cap and could be many other things. Unless you are knowledgable, take it to a professional if a new gas cap does not fix it. BTW, a loose gas cap will cause the light to come on. Tighten it 3 clicks.

If you find out let me know, cause mine has been on for about 25,000 miles now.

it doesn't seem to affect how the car runs, though. . .

what sensors have you replaced?? i am assuming the oxygen sensors. i need a code number to tell you what is wrong. if its a p0420 its probabily the catalytic converter. mabye a p0141-mass air flow needs to be cleaned

You need to have the wiring checked right away before you damage something in the computer control system.

Someone has probably tapped into a wrong wire and until you know which wire was tapped into, you are risking damage to the vehicle's computer system.

The check engine light is a computer trouble code warning system.

Move start switch to position "2". Within the first 4 seconds after moving the start switch to position 2, press the reset button for the trip counter twice within one second. The display for the service request is activated for about 10 seconds. Within these 10 seconds, move the start switch into position "0". The service request continues to be displayed. Press the reset button for trip counter and keep it pressed. Move the start switch into position "2". Continue to hold the reset button for the trip counter pressed until the signal sounds and the new start distance appears in the display (it takes about 10 seconds).

It might be that the injector glow plug relay is going bad. This is usually caused by a faulty glow plug. One thing leads to another on these things. Try plugging in the winter oil warmer overnight and see what that does to help determine your issue. If the light does not stay on the replay the relay....its easy and about 20 dollars.

(Powerstroke57) All speculation what you really need to do is rent or buy a scan tool. Pull codes and start their rather then throwing parts at it. If spending money without a solid answer is the way you want to go then take the other guys advise if not then listen to a good technican and not a typical shade tree mechanic.

I just unscrew and take both battery cables off the battery for about 15 minutes and put back on. This should reset the engine light. The check engine light should go out. If it doesn't, you have trouble

If the gas cap is on just slightly crooked, it will seem tight but you do not get a good seal. re tighten it it sometimes take about 30-40 minutes of driving to go off.

If you have never noticed, when you first insert your key and turn it without starting the car, that light comes on. This is the way the system is set up to alert the driver that the indicator lights are working properly. When you ran out of fuel and your engine died, thus causing the same condition.

If you are querying about the light coming on after you filled your car back up and driving down the road, the most likely cause if from the sediment in the bottom of your gas tank being sucked up by the fuel pump when you ran your car out of gas. This sediment would become trapped in your fuel filter. This would cause a partial clogging and start to starve the engine of fuel and cause it to run a bit lean. The computer in the car can’t compensate for that condition and that would cause the check engine light to come on. Since it is recommended to change your fuel filter after so many miles (depends on the make and model of the car as to the exact mileage) you should replace that fuel filter. Fuel filters are not too terribly hard to replace and are relatively inexpensive. An employee in any parts store should be able to help you locate the fuel filter and make a recommendation on how to easily replace it.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

Repair the problem that turned it on and then clear the code with an OBD2 scanner/code reader

You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration. A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: * The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry. * There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor. Possible solutions include: * In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling * Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary * Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure = P0401 OBD-II Trouble Code = Insufficient EGR Flow EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR. You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms. A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened: * The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced * There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup * The EGR valve is faulty * The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit. * Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open * Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits * Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model) * Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one) * Replace the EGR valve

had the same problem with my daughters 94 vigor and believe it or not it was the alternator. it was putting one and a half a/c volts in the system and would set the code for crank shaft position sensor and would not run over 3000 rpm as soon as the ck engine lite poped on. replace alt and never a problem sence
