If you look at the engine bay where your alternator is, you will see a bracket with a small bolt that's about 4-6" long, and threaded, it's usually a 13mm or so. This is your belt tensioner bolt, loosen this bolt until the belt slacks up enough to remove it, put your new belt on, then tighten the same bolt till the belt is good and snug. Serpentine belts need a little more snugness than the standard "old time" belts. Remember which way the belt comes off, how it winds it's way over and under all those pulleys. Hope this helps

- The easiest way to figure it out is that the serpentine belt basically goes in a circle aurrounding all of the wheels (grooved side in); it will bend back and forth based on the wheel it is wrapping around. Pull it back to fit the smooth side of the belt over a smooth wheel, and forward to fit the grooved side of the belt over a grooved pulley.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 97 Olds Achieva?
1. Place the vehicle on a level surface, in park, parking break set. On the passenger side wheel well, remove the plastic shroud that wraps under the engine. This will make access to the lower pulleys easier. 2. Place a floor jack beneath the oil pan with a small wooden plank to distribute the lifting pressure. 3. Raise the jack until the vehicle begins to rise. 4. Connect a rachet-style tie down between the lifting eye located directly in front of the alternator to a solid and sturdy point on the front of the car. Jack the strap until there is firm tension on it. This keeps the engine from rocking backwards when you later remove the engine mount. 5. Release tension on the belt by lifting the belt-tensioner. I didn't have a wrench handle long enough to reach into the small space, so I used a different method. I used a strap with a hook on the end, like those straps with the rachets on them for tying things down. I lowered the hook end from the rear side of the strut and looped it to the front side and hooked it onto the end of the belt tensioner. To release tension I just pulled up on the strap until the belt was loose enough to pull off the alternator. Skip this step if you just want to cut the belt off or it is already broken. 6. The upper engine mount is located next to the strut. It connects to two other sections that bolt to the engine. The rear mount is below the alternator. The front mount is below the power steering pump. Only the rear mount needs to be removed. Here are the steps to remove the parts needed for removing and re-installing the belt. On the upper engine mount locate three 15mm bolts, two connect at the rear and one at the front. Remove all three bolts. The engine will rotate slightly when removing the bolts, so you may have to rotate it slightly while pulling the bolts out. Next, remove the rear mount. There are two 15mm nuts and one bolt holding it in place. When the rear mount is disconnected, there is a gap between the upper engine mount and the rear mount. The belt will slide out through that gap. To complete removal, slide the belt through the gap between the upper engine mount that you unbolted and the two engine mount sections. 7. When installing the new belt, slide it into the gap that you used for removing the old belt. Seat it onto all pulleys to make sure you don't have any kinks or twists. Wait until the vehicle is reassembled before placing the belt onto the alternator pulley. 8. Reverse the procedure to reassemble the engine mount. I don't have torque values for the bolts; I just made them as tight as they were when I removed them.

Way too much work for me. I agree with the lower shroud. I took a long box end wrench that fits the hex nut in the belt tensioner attached it. I turned it a little by had and then slid a pipe over the end of the wrench to get it up where I can get a better hold and get better leverage. After pushing the tensioner up, the belt came off of the alternator. I dropped it out the bottom. I changed the A/C compressor and put it back in. Not a lot of room but relatively simple to do.

For the home "do-it-yourselfer":. I put the belt around all the wheels except the alternator, then I put a strong rope around the belt and as I pulled it up around the alternator wheel with the rope my son used a screw driver to guide it on, and it worked. You have to pull it hard to compress the spring loaded smooth wheel on the bottom back. There are suggestions to put it on the smooth wheels first but there is no easy way to do that. one of the bottom back smooth wheels is spring loaded and you have to pull the belt hard to compress that spring and make it go on. You can't do that easily and get it around one of the smooth guides, hence I came up with using a rope around the alternator because it is the easiest wheel to get at.

How I was able to do it was first loosen up the tensioner and then lift up the alternator. Its a 1/2" wrench to do this. Then go around the alternator and on top of the other gear and then get the bottom gear on last. sometimes the belt is really hard ot get on so you may have ot muscle it some. Then tighten it all back down.

Possibly the alternator bearings are going out, the belt might be adjusted too tightly, or another device powered by that belt could be going bad. The water pump is commonly powered by the same belt as the alternator, and the bearings in the water pump could be intermittantly siezing up momentarily. Check all pulleys used by the alternator belt, except the crankshaft pulley, to make sure that they turn freely, have no play, and do not grind when turned. When installed, the belt should have about 1/2 inch (12mm) free play along the longest reach of the belt. If there is not sufficient play, the belt will break very quickly, and all components driven by the belt will be damaged.

Look on the back side of the serpentine belt (the side of the belt with the ribs). If any of the ribs are cracked the belt should be replaced. Take a look at the physical condition. If it is cracked on the inside (groove or V side) it needs to be replaced.

Loosen the bolt in the center of the idler pulley. Then loosen the pulley and remove the belt. There is 3 bolts behind the idler pulley that remove the entire pulley assembly. It will help to take the wheel off and remove the plastic access panel behind the wheel to the front side of the axle. Then you can drop the pulley out from the bottom and replace the pulley or whole assembly either one at this point. Reverse instructions to reassemble.

can use a breaker bar with either 3/8" or 1/2" inch drive, whichever fits in square hole. be careful, because that belt tensioner is under a lot of force. You really need 2 people, one to release the belt tension and another to remove/install the belt A further suggestion. I use an 18" long, 1" (id) black iron pipe as an extension for my breaker bar. It makes a world of difference and one person can then de-tension the belt and slip the belt over the alternator pulley.

also if you go to the parts store and pick up the haynes manual for your car it has the diagram right in it. i have found that if you plan on doing any work on your car it is ideal to have the manual. and they are $20 tops

Not knowing what engine you have in your Olds, most engines will have the "Mapping" of the belt located somewhere under the hood. On my two Olds, they are located on the valve cover. When you purchase a new belt for your car the cardboard holder for the belt will display several diagrams based upon the engine that the belt will fit..... you out.
