Serpentine Belts

If it's like the 94 there is a diagram on cover plate for over the fan. The tensioner is in the back and should be loosened to remove the belt.

Your question would be better answered if the type of belt was known, i.e. "serpentine belt" or "timing belt", etc. Also, one would need to know the size of your motor and the year.

Fan belts usually squeal when they are loose or glazed over. Check and see if it is loose and tighten it if necessary. If it is tight and still squeals try getting some belt dressing for an auto parts store and spraying it on the belt.

Loosen the idler pulley adjuster bolt, located behind the pulley bearing. Slip off the old belt and install the new one, being Sure that you have it routed the same way as the old one. STANDARD SAFETY PROCEDURES APPLY!

first of all there are 2 belts not one continuous belt the inner one runs the water pump and alt off the crank pulley the outer runs the ac and power steering off the crank pulley loosen lock bolts and run the adjusting rod the loosen the alt do the same on the power steering lowrider67383@yahoo.com

If your car has a tensioner pulley it can be moved to release the tension on the belt for removal. Make note of the routing of the belt before removing it. This will make installing the replacement belt much easier. If you do not have a tensioner pulley one of your accessory motor/pumps (most likely your alternator) can be moved in order to release the tension on the belt.

Most tensioner pulleys have an hole the exact size of a ratchet drive on the tensioner arm. This allows you to put a standard ratchet (without any socket attached to it) into that hole and use the leverage of the ratchet to release the tension.

Just cut it with a utility knife. That is the easiest way. If it is a newer belt and you want to save it, you need a serpentine belt tool to unload the tension on one of the two tension pulleys. Follow the diagram in the engine bay carefully.

If you're asking how to replace the belt, you will have to loosen the fan (the 13mm bolts on the fan clutch, not the 10mm going into the water pump) in order to get a 1/2" drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner. It's also a good idea to remove the right (passenger side - on your left as you're leaning over the radiator!) idler pulley - a single 13mm bolt. Having that pulley out of the way makes it possible to snake the belt down to the A/C compressor. Once the new belt is wound around all the lower components, heave over on that breaker bar (in the belt tensioner) and slip the belt over the top pulley. Now have your buddy push on that breaker bar one last time while you put the idler pulley back in place with the 13mm bolt.

It only takes about five minutes to replace the belt, but it takes 30 minutes to get the fan out of the way and back on.

Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories.They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes.Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt.Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!

This was posted on another wiki site - it really helped me with replacing the belt on our van: I am not sure which engine you have as you did not indicate. If it is the 3.8 it is very easy. There are only 3 bolts holding it on. There is 1 plug and 1 battery (hot wire connected to it). First start by disconnecting the positive cable from the battery as to avoid any electrical shorting,this will clear any codes and the check engine light if it was on. Then remove the nut from the single wire on top of the alternator. Screw the nut back on so you dont loose it. Then for the plug, just push in on the drivers side of it and pull up and it will come off. Then grab the backside of the belt the runs from the top of the alternator towards the back of the van, pull real hard on it towards the front of the van, (be careful not to pinch your fingers between the belt and the pulley) and the tensioner will give allowing you enough room to slide the belt off of the alternator. Then remove the 3 bolts the hold the alternator in place and whala it's off! When putting it back on put your bolts back in first, then hook up your wire and plug, and then make sure the belt is around all of the pulleys and lined up correctly and pull again towards the front of the van to slide it back on(again...(be careful not to pinch your fingers between the belt and the pulley). Hook the positive wire back up to the battery and then have an assitant to just bump "NOT START" the engine as to get the belts proparly aligned. Take a visual inspection and make sure the belts are positioned correctly on the pulleys and then go ahead and start the van. Good luck!

I have the same problem. The belt squals everytime you hit a puddle or when it rains. The best thing to do is go to a junk yard and pull one off if your lucky or go to a chrysler dodge dealer and they can order one but its costly.

It is important to have properly installed belts in a car. The diagrams for installing a belt for this car are found in the owners manual and the maintenance manual.

I had to do a little creative problem solving to find it!

Hey Mike==The tensoiner has a spring that keeps tension on the belt. Pull up on the belt and you can see which way the tensoiner has to go to remove the tension on the belt. You can generally pry it with a screw driver to get the belt off and back on. There should be a schematic on the fan shroud but if it isn't there draw a picture before you start. Don't rely on memory. GoodluckJoe

The instruction tag on my 315.22600 says "2 drops of SAE 20oil in oiler at right side of front pulley"

On all U.S. vehicles that use A single serpentene the belt has an automatic tensioner. I suspect that your can does too. It could be stuck.

There is a square opening on the front of the tensioner that fit a 3/8" ratchet. Place the ratchet in the opening and crank down toward the ground. You may need to slip a longer bar over the ratchet to get it down.

The belt should be replaced between 60K and 70K. You should replace the water pump at that time also; the water pump has a plastic impeler that breaks. Find an aftermarket water pump with an upgraded metal impeller. You should also replace the coolant reservoir w/cap; the sensor (low coolant sensor) goes bad. Never mix different antifreeze fluids (you will get gummy substance in bottle and coolant lines). You should use the same one for the life of the car.
