Timing and Firing Orders

Firing order refers to the order of power delivery of the cylinders in an engine. Timing and firing orders both contribute to the engine’s fuel economy, power, and longevity. Achieving the proper timing is critical in the engine’s performance.

What is the ignition timing setting for a 1993 Geo Storm 1.6L SOHC?

The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Huh? The answer is 10 degrees BTDC, or whatever is printed on the label underneath the hood. The timing mark is in the MIDDLE of the crank pulley (on the ridge between the alternator and accessory belts). You will not be able to see it, but you can feel it with your fingernail, it is just a little nick. Paint it with a tiny dot (big mark will decrease accuracy). Then you have to jump the diagnostic connector in the passenger side kick area before starting the car, verify the computer light comes on so that it is using no advance, and probably have someone put their foot on the gas to keep it from dying while you set the timing.

What is the timing for a Kia Sportage?

it is auto timed thru the cam shaft and crankshaft sensors. You cannot change it. The timing belt has timing marks when you change the belt in which you line up the crank and cams.

What mileage do you change the timing belt on 2002 Ford Escape?

On a 2.0L (DOHC) Vin B replace the belt at 120,000 miles. Warning: This is an interference engine. If the belt breaks serious engine damage will occur.

What is the firing order for a 1987 Chevy G 10 van with a straight six 250?

As far as I know, the 1987 Chevrolet G10 Van did not come with a 250 Inline 6 cylinder, and I have never seen one in this year model van. The only 6 installed was the 4.3 liter V6. The firing order of the 4.3 is 1-6-5-4-3-2. There was a 292 Inline 6 cylinder installed in the fullsize pickup that year and the firing order for it and the 250 inline 6 cylinder are the same at 1-5-3-6-2-4.

What is the firing order for a 88 s10 pick up 4-cylinder?

The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Count from front of engine 1 -2-3-4. 4 in back. Now under your distributor cap is a rotor. Remember were the rotor is pointed to. Now set the distributor cap back on. The firing order will start at the post that the rotor was pointed. That post will be No: 1. Put the plug wire on it & on your fist plug in front of engine. Now looking at the distributor, go {clock wise} to the next plug wire on the distributor & it will be N0: 3. Put it on the 2nd plug from front to back of engine. Do the same steps for the next two 4 & 2. As long as you have not taken the hole distributor out of the engine. all should be well. If you have taken out the distributor, then you will need to re-take it out again. And pull out the No: 1 spark plug. Then turn the crankshaft over to the two marks on the front bottom pulley. This will bring the N0: 1 piston to the top of the cylinder head & the mark at 0 on bottom. If one of your vales are open at this point, then turn over the engine once more to the mark. Check & make sure that the N0:1 piston is up, & both vales closed. Now set the distributor back inside, with the rotor pointed at the front right of the engine . Remember this is were to start from when you put the distributor cap back on. At this point front right will be No: 1 & go {clock wise} to 3 4 & 2. Hope you did not need to go through all of this & only needed the firing order. Good Luck!! M.C.S. The Missouri Crack Shot.....Bye Bye!!!

What is the firing order on 92 Mitsubishi expo?

It is important to know the firing order of a cars engine when trying to diagnose which one may be misfiring. The firing order of a 1992 Mitsubishi Expo is 1-3-4-2.

How would i fix a Ford Ranger 2.9L V6 that is hesitating during constant speeds when i have already changed the spark plugs wires distributer cap rotor catalytic converter and fuel filter?

When I bought my truck (used) about 10 years ago I had the same problem. I spent about 700.00 on all kinds of supposed fixes. I finally broke down and went to the Ford Dealership. Mind you, I have always driven good old American cars without catatonic converters and computer parts. When I saw the little tiny "350.00 installed" module chip (that fails because of a design flaw) I almost lost it! Then a few years later I see a news clip that Ford is recalling and replacing the chip. I think it was on 1982 to 1992 cars and trucks. So I filed the paperwork thinking, I'll at least get my 350.00 back. A year or 2 goes by and then the '87 Ranger XLT is not included in the recall! Why the hell not! I have only had one serious starting issue since then. So I replaced the starter 2 years ago. My truck has been hesitating a little bit lately, but last night it wouldn't start! I'm getting spark, I smell gas, I'm thinking that STINKING little computer module is burnt out again. They said the only reason it was 350.00 was because it was hard to get to. I'm going to change the distributer and get some new plugs, if that doesn't work I think it's that STINKING computer chip! It might be cheaper to put a new engine in. Peggy

What is the firing order for a 1998 Pontiac Transport Van?

The 1999, 3.4 is 1-2-3-4-5-6, so it's farely possible the 1998 is the same. This is strange to me because the older engines were in a weard order compared to this, Something like 1-5-3-6-2-4 for the inline six. The cylinder placement is: The odd numbered cylinders are at the back side of the engine next to the fire wall, and the even numbered cylinders are along the radiator side. Numbers 1 and 2 are at the front end of the engine where the pulleys are located.

How do you set the timing for a 1979-1981 351 windsor and what should it be set at. the 1 cylinder is the front cylinder on the passenger side. thanks?

You'll need a good timing light and an offset distributor wrench that is 1/2 on one end and 9/16 on the other. Get a good inductive timing light, not one of those cheap crappy ones. An inductive light simply clips on to the spark plug wire, while the crappy cheapos require you to insert a rod like thing in the #1 tower at the distributor cap. You have to have the offset wrench to losen the distributor adjusting bolt buried under the distributor.

Most folks recommend 10 degrees BTC (before the piston reaches top dead center). On the harmonic balancer, you will see some marks that go 10 20 30 with 2 degree ticks between them. Take a wire brush and clean off the 10 degree mark. I also suggest that you paint the mark with white paint to help you see it better with the timing light. Break the distributor hold down bolt lose but leave it snug. Start the engine, warm it up, fix vacuum leaks or mechanical problems.

Turn it off, and then take the vacuum line loose from the distributor. If you don't, the vacuum advance will screw up your initial timing. Cap the vacuum hose. Hook up your timing light. Start motor and run it at your idle speed. Now loosen the distributor bolt. Point the timing light at the balancer, pull the trigger. You'll see it flashes as the timing marks go past the pointer on the timing cover. You'll see your white paint line. All you have to do now is turn the distributor until the white line lines up with the pointer. Tighten the distributor bolt. Unhook your light, and be sure to reconnect your vacuum hose. That's it!

If you hear a bunch of excessive pinging, you may want to back off the timing a couple of degrees. You can also experiment and advance it some more to get more power. Just watch out for too much pinging/ detonation.
