Heat created by the burning of fuel in the combustion chambers needs to be removed quickly to prevent the engine form seizing. This is done in water cooled vehicles (Air is used in some older design cars) by a reservoir of liquid coolant (It used to be water) which is pumped through chambers in the cylinder head and engine block.

The coolant is then passed through a radiator which exposes a large area of metal to air being forced into it by a fan or through the forward movement of the vehicle. The water pump (misnomer it should be coolant pump) is used to circulate the coolant through the radiator and engine to ensure the efficient cooling of the engine.

If there was no water pump or it failed, the water would quickly boil resulting in the overheating of the car engine. The oil that is used to lubricate the engine would then boil and burn leaving residues which would literally glue the moving parts of the engine together. In extreme cases the metal can soften melt and smear. This is known as a seized engine.

Your sunroof has a drain tube that needs relocated, I think there was a recall on this... Same thing happened on my 2004 GLX..

The pump is located on the lower back side of the washer reservoir. To access, you need to remove the inner fender guard of the passenger side front. Remove the screws for the guard, the bottom of the reservoir is in front of the tire. There are two pumps, one for the front washer and one for the rear. Replace the faulty one. This job should take approximately 20 minutes, max.

Definitely not recommended...your engine depends on this pump to circulate cooling water to remove heat. Without it, heat builds and the car will overheat, and may cause permanent, expensive damage to the engine. the question is how much fluid do you lose on your drive as well as do you mind putting water or coolant in the car everytime you crank it up, if its a short drive and you have spare jugs of coolant or water then go ahead, BUT you should NOT do this longer than you have to (til you can get it fixed) bad pump = loss of coolant = overheating = blown head gasket = $800 and up fix

Bad thermostat, bad fan clutch, low on coolant, plugged radiator, restricted air flow thru radiator, missing shroud, water pump impeller damaged, to name a few.

first take the fan clutch off by loosening the four nuts on the fan. Remove the fan pulley. You should be able to loosen the power steering pump bracket enough to get the right hand side of the pump out. Once the p.s. bracket is wiggled out of the way, it's four bolts and off she comes.

yes, leaking coolant is what happens before the pump totally dies, then you have overheating and possible engine damage soon after the leaking.

I had replaced the water pump and radiator. This had continued to overheat but not as bad. After replacing the head gasket it was finally fixed. I was able to answer my own question only after replacement.

Look at the radiator fan, behind it you should see a pulley. The pulley is connected to the water pump. The center pulley is attached to the water pump. It is not a hard pump to replace, just a pain in the rear to do so. Y-THINK-Y

check your EGR valve

located between the firewall and the motor on the trans side takes a bit of time and a lot of trouble but you can do it w/o moving the ac lines

Check the harmonic balancer they had problems with the rubber insert going bad and causing the symptoms you are describing

If memory serves me right you need to remove the pan and remove some parts up front that won't allow the pump to come out until you do.

There are 7 bolts going into the water pump, 4 long and 3 short. The short bolts will go into the 12:00, 5:00, and 7:00 O'clock positions. Look for those 3 (short bolt) positions to have the timing chain cover threaded. The timing chain cover for the 4 long bolts will be smooth. Glad I could help.

You could have a intake gasket leaking. You need to take it to your local mechanic, one that you can trust, have them pressure test you cooling system. Could also possibly be a head or head gasket leaking to the inside. You need to have it check asap.

SHOULD BE THE BELT DRIVEN ACCESSORY DIRECTLY ABOVE THE CRANKSHAFT (LOWEST BELT DRIVEN ACCESSORY ON ENGINE)

You just have to see where it is leaking. There are numberous gaskets and hoses it can be coming from. Have it preasurized and it will be easier to find.

Drain the water from your cooling system. Remove the water pump return hose. Remove the water pump belt. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.

I replaced mine on a 2001 XL 5.3 and the pump cost me $160 new. I paid $100 labor.

The Water pump is located behind the front engine cover. It has a drive belt from crackshaft.Power steering pump belt also on water pump pully.
