Car Stalling Problems

When your car’s engine stops when it’s in idle or is accelerating, then your car has stalled. Almost all stalling problems stem from poor fuel-gas mixture, out-of-tune fuel injection or fuel contaminants.

1991 Chevy lumina you am driving down the road the car is running fine and then of all the sudden the motor starts to sputter and stall on you it will them crank back up put it into gear then it stall?

Look for a missing or broken rubber vacuum cap on the front side of the air intake. There is a vacuum port that can cause a vacuum leak while the engine is running, if it is uncovered. It will appear to run fine for about 15 minutes from a cold start and then suddenly start to stall and run rough. It will be OK again when it cools down and then it starts all over again. It has to do with when the fuel system goes from an open loop operation into a closed loop routine. The fuel system will misread certain sensors because of the vacuum leak. Look for ANY significant vacuum leak, but the one described is the most common.

Why would a 1986 VW Jetta GLI engine shut off without warning while driving?

I had a 1986 Ford Tempo that did the exact same thing. After replacing the relay in the truck of my car, I never had a problem again.

What is the firing order on a 1993 dodge stealth Why would it be 135642?

If this vehicle is the same as a DOHC Mitsubishi 3000GT (it should be) then the firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. Opposing pairs are wired to the three coils so the firing order appears to be as stated in the question. See the associated link for a wealth of firing/timing/mapping information.

My car's engine stalls when slowing down Any ideas?

I am not an expert but I dink around a little bit. I am having that problem on a 1994 sunbird. We think it is because the idle speed is low. Usually idles around 1.5rpm, now it stays around one. When you slow down the rpms drop to the idle position. If that is too low you will stall.

What happens if you put mixed gas in a car?

Adding a small amount of mixed gas and oil, like used in a string trimmer, will not hurt a vehicle. The car might smoke slightly until the mix is burned through.

What could cause a car to shut off when shifting to reverse?

The idle air control valve; may not be operating properly. It is operated from the computer, by electric impulses; it works to control the amount of air needed for idle engine speed; its a cone shaped, tip on a shaft that ,moves in and out of a hole to control idle speed, by adjusting the amount of air to the engine: when shifting ,it take a little more power than, just plain idle; so you may have to clean the passage or the unit or change the idle control valve. it on the throttle body. 2 small screws hold it in place.(allen).

When your fuel tank is half full your car stalls?

This is a 1999 Ford Courier, btw...If the tank gets below a half tank it will lose power (like if it needed STP gas treatment or something). Then, once you stop and start again it's OK for a while. If you fill the tank, the problem goes away. We've had the car to several mechanics and no one can figure it out. Why would a car overheat and shut down?

It can be many things, but the fact that it overheated and then shut down would make me suspect a blown head gasket. That is assuming that you did not just keep drivng it after it became apparent it was hot.

What causes motor mount problems in Pontiac Bonneville 1992 to break?

The motor mounts are made of rubber and have to handle the stress of holding the engine and transaxle weight and forces of turning the wheels during acceleration. Over time, the rubber weakens and will eventually break. Some things that can shorten the life of motor mounts are:

1) exposure to oils or brake fluid

2) high idle

3) misfire

4) aggressive driving style

5) hard-shifting tranny

6) putting the gear select in P or switching between D and R without coming to a complete stop

Use of the parking brake can extend the life of motor mounts. To use the parking brake in this manner when parking the car:

1) Come to a complete stop and hold the brake pedal down.

2) Shift into N

3) Set the parking brake firmly (but not excessively)

4) Momentarily release the brake pedal, then reapply.

5) Shift into P

After you start the engine again, follow this procedure:

1) Apply the brake.

2) Release the parking brake if it is not auto-releasing type.

3) Move the gear select out of P.

Why would a car stall while getting gas?

A modern car's gas tank is designed to have pressure in it. If it does not have pressure, the car could stall. That is one way to keep gasoline from evaporating into the atmosphere.

What causes the engine to stall while driving?

There are several reasons an engine may stall while driving, here are three.

The fuel tank is empty and the engine is starved of fuel.

Not enough power to climb a hill causing a stall.

Faulty or damp electronics on a petrol engine can also cause a stall.

Why would a 2001 ford focus run fine on the highway then you pull in your driveway put in park it idles rough then stalls. It will start up but stalls out right away stays runnin if you keep givin gas?

This just started happening to my 2000 Ford Focus SE. I am investigating the Mass Airflow Sensor, which affects idle as well as the ECM (engine control module) which apparently affects idle, too. I suggest starting there. I had the same problem. There is a vacuum line that goes from the PCV valve to another port behind the engine - mine had a crack right at the elbow. Listen for a hiss or spray carb cleaner around it and look for the engine to rev up. The new vacuum line is covered in a foil, probably to prevent the engine heat from degrading it.

Oil in the spark plug hole on a 2000 dodge neon how do you fix it?

the seal on the valve cover needs to be replaced. my 2000 neon had the same problem. I replaced the seals in the valve cover and it fixed the problem. The kit came with the seals for the spark plugs.
