Car Starting Problems

Chances are that the battery does not have enough power to start the vehicle. The battery can be next to dead and the interior lights and some dash lights may come on, but a fully charged battery is necessary to start the vehicle. Have someone use a DC voltmeter to determine if you have the necessary voltage to start the vehicle. The battery should normally read 12.6 volts. If the vehicle has been sitting for a while, chances are it just slowly drained. This is called parasitic drain, and is usually a result of the clock keeping time, saving your radio station presets, etc. Normally, such a small parasitic drain does not affect the battery's ability to start the engine. However, if the battery was weak to begin with, then a minor parasitic drain could weaken the battery to the point that it cannot start the vehicle. First determine the current voltage of the battery. Determine how much voltage is currently in the battery (0v-12.6v). Try charging the battery and see if it holds the charge over the course of a couple days. If it does, then the battery probably has some life left in it. If it does not hold its charge very well, such as not even overnight, then you will definetily want to replace the battery as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

I have a '92 PA that would die after it warms up. I had to have the crank sensor replaced and later had the cam sensor replaced. Either of these sensors can cause this problem. The computer needs both of these signals to send the fire signal to the correct spark plug. The old distributor used to do this function. Having the error code read out will tell you if this is the problem.

That depends on where it's leaking out; if it's at the master cylinder, you have a bad master cylinder, if it's at the wheel cylinder you have a bad wheel cylinder if it's at a caliper... well, you get the idea.

If you know how to repair a master cylinder, wheel cylinder or caliper, you can often get by with a little savings but it's usually best to just trot down to your local auto parts retailer and get a new or rebuilt one.

Hey Teisha===If it sounds like the noise is in the engine it can be a loose spark plug or an ex manifold gasket leaking. It really has to be heard to be diagnoised. GoodluckJoe

1.Check for corrosion on the battey terminals. 2. check fusible links and cable to starter for damage and tightness. 3.If a manual transmission the clutch must be engaged. 4.If automatic transmission try starting in neutral. More info needed: does the door open buzzer or headlight buzzer work when door is open. If not then there is a battery problem. Has the car been in an accident? There is a breaker for the fuel pump that trips when bumped from impact.

2. When the timing belt broke in my car, there was a focus safety system that would not let the car turn over until that was fixed. That way the piston wont slap valve.

Okay, crank it. No start...are you getting fuel? If so, check for spark. If you are getting spark and fuel, check to see if your timing is correct. After that, I'm really not sure...if you are getting gas and spark, then the thing should fire up.

Check the throttle linkage. I once saw a dragonfly that had been caught in the linkage, making the engine race like that. Start with the easy stuff first.

Yes it will. It will act like it is the battery almost at first where when you go to start it it almost starts but after you keep trying the battery will really die!! It happened to me in the 5 minute parking at the airport...needless to say airport security wasn't too thrilled abotu me and my car just sitting there for abotu 2 hours!!!! It is a kinda expensive part also.

Second gear start was a feature on a few GM car models in the mid 90's. When engaged, the car will start off in second gear instead of first. This is why the car is slower while turned on. There is much less torque output starting out in second gear, providing improved traction while driving in icy and snowy conditions.

No. It should only spark with the engine turning over.

This is most likely the park / neutral switch on the floor shifter. Next time it happens, bump the shifter toward the park position or move it to the neutral position. If it starts right after that, it is that switch. There was a recall on the 1993 thru 1998 Jeep GC's for that exact thing. I had it happen on my wife's 95 Jeep GC and it was very frustrating until I happened to bump the shifter on one of the 20 times climbing in and out of it. GoodLuck! StudeWally

It means the battery has been drained of all it's power. Simply recharge the battery with a battery charger and it will be fine. You do not have to replace the battery, although draining the battery fully does harm the battery. Charge the battery fully and it will function as it should.

Some vehicles require "shims" to be installed when a starter is replaced so the Bendix drive will engage the pressure plate teeth. If the starter is too far away from the teeth on the pressure plate, the vehicle will fail to turn over.

When you hold the gas pedal to the floor you are clearing a flooding condition. There is several possibilities as to the cause. The fuel pressure regulator or the throttle position sensor is defective. You need to take it to a REPAIR shop and have them diagnosis the problem. A parts house will read the codes and sell you parts that may not fix your problem.

If you are getting spark, check the electric fuel pump pressure. Had a similar problem, changed the fuel pump, cured it. ==New Answer Headline== Also, if you turn the ignition switch on and the 'Check Engine' display light does not illuminate but all the rest of them do, then it could be a blown fuel pump fuse. It's a 20 amp fuse mounted by the right front headlight. Don't do what I did and pay 150$ for an engine diagnostic check all for a .50 cent fuse !

Test for a broken wire between the fuel pump and power distribution box. Check for bad connectors also.

I had the same problem with my car a couple of months ago. I would try calling your local Volkswagen dealership...chances are, it is a warranty issue and it will be free of charge!
