On a 2002 Hyundai Elantra why would the check engine light come on and cause the car the jerk?

if it runs sluggishly and dies when you "punch" it - like to get out in front of traffic, good chance it's the timing belt. Hyundai uses a "toothed" belt for timing and not a chain as in alot of other vehicles. the timing belt controls the rate at which the pistons fire in conjunction with the fuel injection. not sure the cost to replace it but not an easy task as all the belts and possibly the water pump needs to come off to accomplish this. car should run almost like new when done though..............

If you reset the engine light on the Toyota Camry and drive for 50 miles will you pas emissions?

It isn't possible to answer that question. Did you repair the problems that set the light in the first place? Are there any other problems with the engine? In general, if everything is working properly AND you have resolved all of the issues that the computer detected, you SHOULD pass the emissions test.

TheAp: IF you repaired the problem, you have to clear the code (either removing the battery for 10 min NEG side, or code scanner) Then you have to go through "Enable Criteria" Check mfg. for the car's "Requirements" to have the emissions system specific checklist.

and SUPPLYING your car is running in good shape and the emissions system is doing its job, most likely you'll pass.

if you clear the code only, you'll just clear the emissions checklist, the car WILL go over the "Checklist" again and for smog, your car MUST finish the Enable Criteria list.

In short terms, if its a part failure. Probably not.

If it was a gas cap you forgot to tighten and you cleared the code, most likely.

What is the procedure to change oil on a 1996 gmc sierra pickup?

I do it this way: I warm the engine up, shut it off, and go and pull the drain plug out of the oil pan with a drain pan under it. I remove the oil fill cap from the top of the engine. Whiel the engine is warm I just loosen the oil filter, I do not remove it until most of the oil has drained from the oil pan, then i remove the oil filter and put that upside down to drain into the pan. Look at the old oil filter and make sure the rubber gasket ring came off with the old filter. Take a rag and wipe the surface area where the oil filter seats against the block. Put clean fresh oil on the new filter around the rubber ring and thread it onto the threads and spin it up until it makes contact and then 3/4s of a turn. After inspecting and cleaning the drain plug, put the drain plug back in the oil pan threading it in by hand as far as you can to avoid crossthreading it,tighten it but not overtighten, then wipe everything down so you can tell if you have a leak. Go up and add the necessary quarts of oil by pouring them into the oil filler tube. Make sure you know how many quarts your engine takes. DO NOT OVERFILL Start your engine and let it run for a minute or two to fill the oil filter and get oil throughout the engine and then shut it off. I let it sit for about 5 minutes while I clean up and then recheck the level using the dipstick. Make sure you are on a level surface to get an accurate reading. Remember it's easier to add a little then to take it out. Take your used oil and filter to a recylcing place and know you did the job yourself, did it right and saved a few bucks in the process.

Can your car just break down if your check engine light comes on in your Mercury Mountaineer and all indicators appear normal?

The computer NORMALLY puts the engine in a "limp home" mode allowing you to get to a safe place to have it checked. By driving it further than necessary you may be doing more damage to the engine than what was originally incurred. But realize a check engine light could come on with a trouble code for a fuel delivery problem and your fuel pump could just quit. The computer just logged the fault, but did not shut the engine down, the fuel pump failure did. So some people have thought the computer has the power to shut you down but a sfaety factor was built into the computers allowing you the ooportunity to get the car home and have it checked. Just don't push your luck....so that at the casino.

How do you turn off the check engine light on a Toyota Highlander?

If you have had the "Check Engine" code checked and there is nothing wrong that needs attention, you can disconnect the negative terminal cable on the battery (be careful doing this) and leave it off for a minuter or so and then reconnect. This should reset the check engine system. Also you might check to see if your gas cap is on tight after refueling the car. Not having the cap tight will cause the check engine light to come on. On my Highlander I tighten the cap till it clicks once.

You don't even have to go that far. Drive for 15-20 miles, (this can be a few trips), and see if the light goes off, if it does, then it was just moisture on the sensors. Sometimes heavy pollen can cause the light to go on as well. This has fixed ours many times.

Also, if the light wasn't reset after an oil change, do the following. Turn car on, (Acc is fine), set the mileage to the ODO setting, (total mileage), hold the milage reset button in, turn car off, then turn on and watch the ODO screen reset, usually dashes, ----, ---, --, -, . Then turn car off. Restart. The light should be gone.

1997 Lumina using coolant and water Temp light going on what should I check first?

It is obvious you have a leak and the engine is overheating. If you do not see coolant on the pavement or an apparent leak anywhere, that is a bad sign. Smell the exhaust and if it smells sweet or you see white smoke at the tailpipe, you have a blown head gasket. Do not ignore this as it can cause serious engine damage. Check the oil level and if over full or milky looking, you for sure have serious problems. Another sign is bubbles coming from the radiator with the cap off cold engine just after startup and running. Have this looked into ASAP before you ruin this engine.

Check engine light on a 1991 dodge dynasty comes on when you hit a bump shut engine off and restart light stays off until you hit another bump?

It's probably a loose connection somewhere and the only way you'll find it is to borrow, rent or buy a code scanner, take the vehicle for a ride, hit a bump and with the engine still running, check the codes. If you can't do it that way, leave the engine in diagnostic mode THEN take it for a ride and hit the bump. Either way, you need to isolate the problem to find out if it's a component that's failing internally when you hit the bump or if it's just a wire or connector.

The check engine light flashes 13 times what is the code for this on a 1989 Plymouth Sundance?

Count again. Without starting the car, turn the ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON. After a few seconds, the check engine light will flash out the trouble code. It will consist of two digits with a very short pause between. Then there will be a longer pause after which the the next trouble code (if any) will flash out. After all the codes have flashed out, the computer will flash 5-5. Fifty five is the indication that all the trouble codes have been revealed. The computer will repeat all the codes a second time. By the way, if the code flashed out is 13 (as opposed to 13 flashes, it indicates a problem with the car's MAP sensor.

What would cause a 2002 Chevy Cavalier to have low trac off shift hard and the check engine light on?

I too would like to know this. I have been told that it can be caused by a shift sensor in transmission. I have also been told that there are 3 different sensors in this particular transmission. I'm not sure of the locations of the sensors either. Whether they are in the outer body of transmission or internal.

Why does the check engine light still come on after replacing it on a 2003 Jeep Liberty?

Sorry, the question should read "after replacing the gas cap" Added: It may not be the gas cap that is causing the fault. You could check for other error codes. If your sure it was an error caused by a loose or faulty gas cap you may have to take your jeep in and have the error code cleared/reset, and they could check for other error codes at the same time. Added: I recently "reset" my check engine light by disconnecting the battery for about a half hour. Took a terminal connection off and went and watched a (tv) sitcom. The light was off when I reconnected and drove off.

What if the check engine light is on in your 96 tercel you had it checked and they said it was the O2 sensor you replaced the sensor but the light is still on Does it need some time to reset or what?

I just bought a 1996 tercel and the check engine light came on and stayed on. My friend is studying to be an ASE mechanic and he hooked his Solus Pro, which is a sophisticated car computer, and he came up with the same code, O2 sensor. After running a complete test he reset the codes to 0. I haven't had the check engine light come on since. My friend said that if it does come on again we will run a deeper scan and a road test. It has been two weeks so far.

What if the service engine soon light stays on transmission was serviced and oil changed what else good it be?

what type of car? my truck has that light for an oil change and it can be reset. Also, if concerned you can get a code scanner for OBD-II. The most notorious "service engine soon" light problem is due to the fact that the O2 sensor(s) is bad and needs to be replaced.
