RED means DEAD do not drive...(Overheating or no oil pressure) Orange CHECK ENGINE light is a sensor or code in the emissions system....read up it to fix Everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and a professional shop manual should be available at your local library for diagnostic procedures etc, just make copies of the right pages, as they are usually REFERENCE only...read up and good luck :)
How do you reset the Check Engine Light on a 1996 Chevy Blazer?
pull the fuse on the main box the 7.5
(another answer)
The check engine light means that something in the engine electronics, such as a sensor, is not allowing the engine to run "closed loop". Ignoring this problem will mean that a) the vehicle will not pass the next smog inspection, if you live in a state like California, and b) you will likely get reduced gas mileage and possibly performance.
Take your car to a service station, or dealer, to hook up to the engine computer to ask what the problem is. It could be that you need new oxygen sensors, for example. You can do this yourself if you can get the right equipment to connect to the computer. Some places rent this gear. [Oh, I forgot to mention that some cars are designed to automatically turn this light on every 100,000 miles (or 50,000) just to get you to the dealership to have it turned off, for a small inspection fee, of course]
if that's the only code, then the sensor is most likely shorting while hot, and kills the ignition...so yes..also more diagnostics can be found in the book....
everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available in the REFERENCE section...make copies of the right sections...good luck :)
My epc light came on because of battery failure. My battery was acting funny and barely starting the car. I went to autozone and had them check my battery which ended up having a bad cell. I replaced the battery and the car easily started up. After the car started the light never came back on.
If the speed sensor malfunctions would it cause the check engine light to come on?
Based on all the information you provided, Yes, It would be nice if you would include the model and year and engine. My crystal ball ain't as good as it once was.
Just go to your local auto parts store and buy a new gas cap. Make sure it is a compatible one. Your current cap is probably not fitting correctly and this will cause it to tell the computer in your car, that it's off completely.
Not necessarily that they will fix of the problem.
If whats wrong with car is covered by the warranty then they will fix it for free, otherwise they will charge you for diagnose , and if i was you i would go and ask for copy for warranty list.
Usually the fuel cap and other leaks like that will reset after the engine has gone through a few cycles, or you can use one of the better OBD2 diag scanners to clar the code. Another easy way to clear your codes is to simply disconect the negative battery terminal for about a minute. This will clear to code. If the code comes back on then there is something else going on.
I would make sure that the connections are back on tightly. Sounds like a loose connection. Your battery could also be going bad, but usually this would cause problems starting. There should be a ground connection along with a connector at the alternator. Make sure these are tight. Next check that the cables are connected tightly at the battery. I hope this helps you. It sounds like something else is wrong with your engine, since it's the SES light that's on, not the battery light. Get the code read at Autozone/Advanced Auto.

I just found this from the other site saying, when it comes with (for example)nissan oxygen sensor, check engine light is on because the computer has detected a problem with the emissions control system. Unless you fix whatever has caused the computer to set a fault code, it will come right back on. Depending on the model year of your vehicle and weather it is an OBD1 or OBD2 system, disconnecting the battery for a few minutes may reset the light, especially on an 1995 and older OBD1 system. Rarely will this work on a OBD2 system. On an OBD2 and some OBD1 systems, you need a scan tool to reset the light. Take it to any auto parts store and see if they will scan the system for you, free of charge. Depending on your state, they may accommodate you. The code they find will help to determine what is wrong. If you purchase the repair parts from them, they may reset the light after you make the repair. One thing to do before any of this is to check your gas cap. A loose gas cap will set the light. If you find that it was loose, tighten it, (3 clicks). The computer will turn the light off after a few driving cycles if that was the problem. |}
How do you turn the check engine light off on a 1998 Toyota Camry?
THe only thing you can do is to have the vehicle hooked to a diagnostic machine. Which Advance Auto will do for free. After that just get them to explain the result and fix it. Another way to temporarily make it go off is to diconnect the battery for about five to ten min..
you might hit a puddle or a big bump that shook the vehicle to make the light come on
How many miles are on your car? I'm having a similar problem. I have had the TPS Selenoid replaced ($500), and the check engine light is back on. I then had another transmission part replaced (shifting switch of some kind, another $600). I drove about 50 miles and the check engine light is back on and shifting erratically every so often... I really don't think the mechanics know what it is. Be thankful your mechanic isn't taking you for hundreds of dollars... there probably is nothing wrong!! Good luck!
How do you reset the check engine light on 2001 impala?
You can try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes. This will work sometimes and sometimes it won't. If that does not work, you will need a OBD2 scan tool to reset the light. Also, if you do not repair the problem that caused the light to come on in the first place, it will just come right back on.
How do you reset the service light on 2002 Golf?
the light can only be cleared by a scanner take it to a qualified mechanic
You must be kidding. The check oil light means, Check the oil level. It is either low or the oil pressure is low. Check engine light means the computer has detected a problem effecting the emissions output of the engine. Call a professional. Do not drive this car.
How would you get check engine code from your 2004 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2l automatic?
It would probably have to be hooked up to a diagnostic machine. Or you might be able to get a code reader to see if that does it.. but I doubt it if its a 2004, it probably will more than likey require the expensive diagnostic machine that is at mechanic shops.
Can a bad O2 sensor cause a random cylinder misfire?
No. It would affect all cylinders equally, unless you've got a V engine with dual exhausts, two O2 sensors and possibly two separate FI computers,
How do you turn off the check fluid dash light on a 2001 Ford Escape?
fill the fluid that is low. If the light does not turn itself off after doing so, then likely you have a bad fluid level sensor. This happened to mine too. I took it in for svc and they replaced the whole coolant tank.
How do you reset the service engine light on a 1997 dodge grand caravan?

Why would the check engine light be on in a Toyota Corolla?
Check your gas cap to make sure it seals tight. My check engine light comes on every now and then in my 1991 Camry and once I reseat the cap it goes out almost immediately. If this is not the problem have a mechanic check the oxygen sensor. Good luck, JFD EGR Va.ve? It might be your EGR valve which is part of your emissions system. My 1997 Celica passed the emissions test but the EGR valve still needed to be replaced. After it was replaced, the check engine light went off. The part cost about $75 from a Toyota dealer.
There are many possibilities, the only way to know for certain is to use a code scanner. A 98 might be able to connect to an "OBDII" code reader. You can probably borrow, rent or buy one from a local auto parts retailer. If you borrow one you can figure out what's wrong and buy the parts right on the spot. Often it's something as simple as an Oxygen sensor. Whatever it is, the computer already thinks something is wrong and that is why the light is on.
