EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

Where is the EGR valve located on a 1998 Mazda Protege?

Frankly I don't know about your 98, but unfortunately I've been forced to learn about my 2001 2.0 ES GT Protege. I would have to assume... that your engine is basicly similar. For a quick glance look under the air breather hose that leading to the throttle body also attached is your gas pedal linkage. You will also see several metal lines coming from your exhaust manifold area over to the ERG valve area which is immediately below the throttle body mounted on the drivers side of the engine toward the fire wall. In my case I have owned the car since new in Jan 2001 and Ive put 177,000 kms to date. My only complaint about the car is the dammmmm ERG valve giving me idling problems and needs cleaning or replacing every 30,000 kms.

Good luck with yours and

Gary

How do you change the EGR valve on a 96 3000GT?

The EGR valve should be located towards the rear and center of the engine. Just remove the hoses and unbolt from the engine. Looks like a flying saucer or dashpot design

What causes a 96 ford crown vic 4.6L to have idle problems?

Check out this entry at a Police Interceptor Specialty Site: http://www.p71interceptor.com/ For informtion specific to the Idle Air Control Valve: http://www.p71interceptor.com/repairs/iac/ "Install a new Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). One day, the engine decided it wouldn't idle unless I depressed the accelerator pedal with my foot. While holding my foot on the accelerator, the idle was very smooth but as soon as I let up on the gas pedal the engine tachometer reading shown on the connected scantool would drop so low that the engine would stall. The symptoms were consistent with a defective iac valve, so I gave the iac valve a couple hits with the butt of a large screwdriver in an attempt to bring it back to life. Sure enough the symptoms disappeared and the engine idled as it should. The special ordered iac valve arrived a couple days later, and only required the removal of two bolts to install it."

Where is the dpfe sensor located on the 2001 explorer sport 2wd?

On the 4.0 L OHV engine, the DPFE sensor is located on the driver's side of the engine. It is mounted on the side of the upper "plastic" intake manifold, directly below the idle air control valve. It is a small rectangular box with an electrical plug in connection on the front and 2 vacuum hoses connecting to the bottom. Originally they were made of metal, but I believe they are a plastic body now.

How do you check the EGR system on a 91 CRX?

Go to Hondahookup.com (You'll have to register) Download the manual for a 92-95 Honda Civic because the manual for 91 CRX doesn't show the EGR valve. After download go to the section that says "fuel and emissions"--The Egr section is on pages 11-135 thru 11-139. One difference between the Civic and CRX is that the 2P connector is 2 wires on the civic and 4 on the CRX. The extra 2 wires on that plugin go the fuel injection system componet which is also unfer the control box. The 2 wires(on the 4 wire plugin) that go to the EGR control solenoid vale are ORN/BLU and BLK/YEL-----Hope this helps

Where is the egr valve located on a 2001 frontier truck with a 6 cylinder?

if you look at the drivers exhaust manifold you will see a 3/4" metal tube that screws into the manifold, follow the metal tube up and it srews into the egr valve witch is under the edge of the fuel injection dome on the driverside.

Where is the egr valve located on 1998 Honda Passport and how can you correct EGR flow insufficient?

Locate and clean the EGR valveIt is located on the left side back for the engine looking from the front. Once u find it remove the two bolts and pull upward. Remove the gasget and use Carb cleaner to remove all the carbon deposits inside the EGR valve. This worked for me and i saved 110 dollars by not replaceing it. Works just like new.

You might also want to clean out the intake port located in the throttle body. That was my problem. All I needed to do was remove the air intake cover to the throttle body and take a small bristle brush and clean out the exhaust intake. It wasn't getting efficient air intake and that is why my code kept coming up.

I just completed the full top end cleaning on a Honda 3.2 L engine. I found it to be a fairly simple task for a home mechanic. The main thing I found was a carbon blockage where the vacuum tube comes out of the back of the intake and goes to the vac solenoid on the left side fuel rail. Easy to clean. just pull the vac tube off of the fuel rail and spray carb cleaner thru to the intake. after I performed the complete upper end cleaning My engine light went out.

Will a faulty egr valve cause the enigine to not crank on your 97 Saturn sl?

"Cranking" an engine is a term that is a throwback to when there was an actual crank handle that was used when you wanted to start the engine. Today, the term "Crank the engine" refers to the electric motor (starter) that does the cranking for us.

So technically, no, the EGR valve should not stop an engine from "cranking".

However, since many people use the term "crank the engine" to mean actually starting the engine, perhaps it would be valuable explain that part too.

An EGR valve prevents combustion temperatures from getting so high that valves and pistons melt or weaken from excessive heat. A faulty EGR valve can cause problems, but if the oxygen sensors detect that condition, the computer is SUPPOSED to force the engine to run more rich (excessive fuel), preventing damage.

It is possible, however, that a lean burn (insufficient fuel) condition can cause valves, pistons or head gaskets to burn, making the engine inoperable.

Computer diagnostics can tell quite a bit of information. Connect a code scanner to the diagnostic port to read the codes. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers such as Auto Zone or Oreilly.

IF the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) is on, another way to read the computer codes is to connect a jumper wire to the diagnostic port. Examine the diagnostic port on your Saturn. The port is to the left of the steering column and at the bottom of the dashboard. A small piece of wire can be inserted into the two top rightmost sockets and the computer will indicate what codes it has detected. When the jumper wire is in place, turn the key to the on position and you should hear the radiator fan come on, but do not start the engine. Watch the MIL; it will start immediately giving you codes.

If the jumper is in the proper two sockets, the MIL will start flashing.

First it will flash once, pause, then twice, then a longer pause.

That indicates code 12. Code 12 is just the starting position, it is normal and will always be displayed.

Code 12 will be repeated 3 times, then the computer will start to display any other fault codes that it has detected.

You should have a paper and something with which to write while you record the codes. Each code will be displayed 3 times, then the computer will continue to the next code. Once all codes have been displayed, the computer will start over, and display 12, indicating that the list has started again.

If the computer detected no codes, there could still be a problem. Check for fuel pressure. The computer does not detect a faulty fuel pump or an empty fuel tank. The computer also does not detect low or no compression, so these are both conditions that you would need to test independently.

97 is ABOUT the year that most vehicles started using OBD2 diagnostics. If your vehicle is OBD2 compliant, the jumper wires may not work for you, check with your operators manual to prevent damage if the vehicle is OBD2 compliant.

Steps to replace the egr valve on 2004 dodge rame hemi?

The EGR valve is located in the front right of the motor, slightly below the alternator. It is about the size of a large bottle of pills with an attachment on it.

First, unlock the air filter cover and remove the air filter. Place a screwdriver in the ring sticking out above the air filter box below the windshield trim piece to hold up the air filter cover up and out of the way. The air filter box sits on three holders with rubber ends. Grasp the air filter box with both hands and lift straight up off the holders and out of the engine compartment. This will give you a clear view of the EGR valve and room to work as well.

Next, remove the wiring harness by sliding the red tab on the connector out of it's centered, locked position. Then remove the connector by pulling it away from the EGR valve.

The EGR valve has 4 bolts. 2 are 8mm and the other 2 are 10mm. Remove all 4 bolts, being careful not to drop or lose the gaskets on either end of the EGR valve. Removing these bolts is best done with a 1/4" ratchet with deep-well sockets or regular sockets and a small extension.

Remove the EGR valve and either replace with a new one or spray inside thoroughly with carbeurator cleaner or brake cleaner to free up the plunger action inside. This will break up the carbon on the inside, allowing the plunger that is in the valve to move freely, which is the likely cause if the problem. After soaking, it may be necessary to use a screwdriver to break free and exercise the plunger. Place the tip of screwdriver inside the opening in center of the EGR valve on move the plunger in and out. This may be difficult, so use spray liberally. Wipe carbon deposits off any area the will touch the gaskets and clean off excess spray.

Re-install EGR valve the same way it came off, making sure to reattach wiring and secure.

Note: If a check-engine light is on prior to replacing the EGR valve, disconnect the positive terminal on the battery and wait 30 seconds for the computer to reset itself. Reconnect the positive terminal and start engine. If problem persists, consult the dealer.

Addition-I took the two exhaust bolts off from the top but found it much easier to reach the two main housing bolts from below. I started all 4 bolts from underneath then tightened the exhaust again from the top. Make sure to wear safety glasses because carbon WILL fall into your face. Someone made the comment that the bolts will be tight and they were. I used an 18 inch length of pipe attached to the end of my ratchet for additional leverage.

How do you replace the EGR valve on a '98 Expedition?

I have a 1999 expedition 5.4 the same motor as the 98 . you will need metric socket's 1/4 " drive and a 3/8 " drive with a deep 10 mil. socket . also a large adjustable wrench and a pipe to fit over the adjustable ( as a breaker bar ) take off the throttle body cover , disconnect the EGR pressure switch , (I HADE TO REPLACE THE PRESSURE SWITCH ALSO ) there are two nuts holding that on , remove , there is one bolt on top holding the black bracket on , remove . Take the adjustable wrench and undo the large nut on the EGR valve , this is where the deep socket comes in undo the two remaining bolts and remove the EGR valve , clean the surface very good . Use throttle body cleaner and clean the inside good . seal gasket and repeat . I hade the check engine code reset , and my gass mileage inproved .

GOOD LUCK

Do you need to replace the EGR on your 2000 Mercurn Mountaineer 5.0 if you are getting a p0401 egr flow efficient code?

Possibly, but not necessarily. IT may be a dpfi valve that is plugged, a piece of carbon caught in the EGR valve, carbon build up elsehere preventing circulation. Take it to a independent garage that specializes in troubleshooting of this nature.

Answeri was getting a p0401 and a p0402. Follow the steps for cleaning below:The EGR on the 97 merc is on the back left side on the intake near the firewall. I have had sucess with cleaning out the throttle body and pathway to the erg for clearing the MIL or check engine light for odb codes related to excessive and inexcessive flow rates in the egr. Open the hood and locate the air box for the air filter. Connected to this is a large semi flex tube with a clamp at each end. One at the air box and one at the throttle body. Just remove the clamps and push open the butterfly valve and spray out the insides with carb cleaner. Note, if you have low miles, under 100k, I would not recommend this, because they seal them with a coating and you may cause further problems. However, if you are like me you will have over 100k. I have 127k on mine. Don't start the vehicle right after this. Spray it out several times and and let if dry out. You can prop a screwdriver in the spring just to the right of the TB valve. It is tight to try to remove the egr in your driveway. One of the two screws is ok to remove and the other is very difficult with standard tools. If you wish to see what the egr looks like check out autozone or parts America web sites and search for egr and I know at least one of them has a picture of one.

Where is the erg valve on a 1995 Chevy astro and how do you change it?

I've expericened this problem on my 94 . you have to take the dog houseing off which is the covering right underneath your radio,it's a silver part right over the rotor cap and it has three screw s to replace it you also might want to change the hoses on it as well

Where is the app sensor on a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo?

You mean the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. On the 3400 engine it is located on the top of the engine, behind the aluminum intake. Open the hood and look at the intake (stamped 3400). Directly behind is the MAP sensor. It has a small 1" hose connected directly to the intake, as well as a weatherpak connector. It is approximately 3" X 1" and is black in color. Someone should answer for the 3800 engine.
