How do you display check engine light obdII codes?
By paying to hooking up an OBD2 scanner. It will display the codes fix problem erase codes and if is fixed light is gone
What does the check engine light mean?
The check engine light means that there is a posssible problem with the engine . There is not one specifc problem that it could be. The dealership can look at the chip and figure out the specific problem and get you going in the right direction. Apparently, if the light comes on intermittendly, immediate check-up is required, when it stays on solid, the diagnosis can be delayed for a little while. Often on 1995 and older models of the Chevy Cavalier, the "Check Engine Light" will be due to a problem with your Emissions. The wisest thing to do is take it to your local chevy dealer and have them service your engine for a small fee. My check engine light has been on for two and a half years and my car shifts hard. I went to a dealer and they told me it was my speed sensor saying there is a slip in the trany that wasnt there so it Was putting to much pressure in my trany lines cause the car to shift hard my ets off light is also on they tried to tell me it was the motor mounts. Danielle-Owner of a 98 chevy cavalier Z24. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSIONS of the vehicle.. Don't let it bother you as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say a small percentage of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have multiple computers aside from the powertain computer) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests or
How do you reset check engine light on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
By repairing whatever tripped the light. Then you use an OBD2 scan tool to reset the light.
You just have to disconnect the battery for a minute and then the check engine light go off, if the problem has been fixed!!!
Disconnecting the battery will reset the light on most, but not all, 1995 & older cars, but on 1996 and newer cars this will rarely reset the light. It requires an OBD2 scan tool to reset the light on most newer cars.
How do you reset the check engine light on a 1995 Nissan Maxima?
It will automatically reset itself after you have started the car 50 times after the problem was fixed, or sometimes if you disconnect the battery for a while it will reset itself.
I had this very problem with my 1995 Plymouth Voyager, today. I discovered the tube to the right of the positive crank case ventilation valve had become disconnected. It is located on top and at the rear center of the engine by the firewall.
AnswerPull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that none are still active. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances by the public. I am sure I will revise this as time goes on, as it is an in-depth understanding for the public. It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem with the EMISSION SYSTEM only. Emission system being the pollution control system. Don't get a hard on against it as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. I would say that about 7% of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have 17 different computers) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they can be vastly different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place. After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ vastly, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights that are set based on a pre-set mileage.
AnswerThe check engine light comes on when the computer diagnostic has stored an error code. It can be something as simple as the battery has been disconnected recently or something to do with the emissions controls. One way for you to find out is by checking the codes yourself. IT may help to point you in the right direction. This page gives the procedure and some of the codes. Of course, if none of this means anything to you, you can always have to dealer hook it up to their diagnostics.http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html
What is wrong with a 2001 Chevrolet Metro if the engine light is on?
Take it to Auto Zone they can hook it up to a computer and find out mine was the Camshaft sensor
Auto Zone will tell you the problem code and the faulty part. 99% of the time it is just a sensor and not any thing that stops your engine from working. Also u can reset lights by removing terminals from battery then wait 1 minute and then reattache them. If light goes out then problem fixed but if still on then auto zone.
What does the ets off light on dash mean?
Read your owner's manual. The ets is the traction control, and the light means it is turned off.
Enhanced traction control used the ABS system improve your vehicles traction by slowing an individual wheel down ( slipping wheel will spin ) thus applying more power to the one with better grip and the speed sensors monitor all four wheels to make sure that one is not spinning much faster than the rest.
How can you shut off the service engine soon light on a 2002 Nissan Altima 25s?
By having the problem that tripped the light repaired.
Clogged injector, burnt valves, blown head gasket, bad intake gasket. spark plugs.
What does the check engine light mean 2001 Grand Caravan?
It means the computer has detected a problem with the emissions controls. Have the computer scanned with an OBD2 scanner, for the trouble code to assist in diagnosing the problem. Do not ignore this light even if the engine seems to run fine. Damage to the O2 sensor or the catalytic converter may occur. My check engine light is on. It has to have the internal control module memory replaced. If you live where there is emission inspections and your van has less than 80,000 miles on it, it is covered by federal emissions law warranty.
The check engine light won't go off but I'm quite sure nothing is wrong how do you get it to go off?
this recently happened to our '96. First suspect gas cap left off and/or loose while refilling at gas pump or even after driving. Good answer was go to Murrays Auto Supply or Autozone for FREE code check and reset (Ohio resident). Next time or other reason it happened the O2 sensor was fried because it was too close to catalytic converter (engineering problem and/or recall issue). Good luck will watch for future posts. Go to a place like advance auto, they will scan it for free. Then you can post the code and let someone tell you what is wrond with the car.
What does the service engine light mean on a Chevy Corsica?
It means the computer has detected a problem with the emissions system. It could be a number of things. Have the computer scanned to recover the code. This will help you determine what the problem may be.
Yesterday I fix the same problem with my 89 tempo. The fuel pump would turn on and off all the time while driving around. I put in a new pump, filter and fuel pump relay. The problem continued. It ended up being the plugin on the fuel pump, the plastic was cracked and that made for a loose conection. You can hear the fuel pump turn on for a second or two when you turn the key to acc. If you don't hear that then it has to be one of these 4 problems. Make that 5 problems. Forgot to mention the fuel cut-off switch. == == For nearly 2 years, I have had the same problem with my 93' Tempo; where my engine completely looses power in and out of the highway, even local driving was beginning to become more and more difficult. After replacing the fuel pump, wiring, hoses and filters, I have found the problem to be of an electrical origin. After investigation, I have come to find out that it was my RELAY BOX (The black box that is connected to the drivers side strut mount beneath the hood); inside the box are a series of relays meant for different components for the car, such as the Fuel Pump, Air conditioning and so on. Thankfully, my father works for a Government Contractor revolving around electronic engineering, thus I was able to pinpoint the problem faster and more efficiently with his help. The FUEL PUMP Relay inside the black box was actually completely worn out (not engaging correctly). I have went online to find where to get a spare relay to replace it and, HOLEE CRAP, it was an obsolete model that was not being manufactured or sold anymore. My father came up with a crazy idea of rigging the relay circuitry to accept a heavier duty PONTIAC Fuel Pump Relay; this relay was ALOT more common and widely purchased in the United States, so it only costs 5 bucks. He was able to soder heavy guage wires onto the relay board made them extend out of the box to connect to the heavier PONTIAC Relay mounted into place against the strut near the Black Box. Ever since, my car has been running well without it loosing power. Hope this is helpful to any and all owners of ford Tempos.
How do you reset the service engine soon light on a 01' after an oil change?
Just disconnect the battery for about 2 mins and then reconnect. Open the glove box, reach in and remove this little book called an Owner's Manual. Inside this little book is all kinds of answers to this and many other questions. You will find it invaluable for future reference. Answer; How to Reset the Change Engine Oil Message The Aztek uses the GM Oil Life System to calculate when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. It is widely thought to determine oil life by counting engine revolutions. While there is much debate about the merits of such a system as a basis for determining when to change engine oil, the system should be reset after each oil change to ensure that the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message does not appear inappropriately. There are two procedures for resetting the system, one for Aztek's with a DIC (Driver Information Center) and one for Aztek's without a DIC. PROCEDURE 1: Aztek's with a DIC 1. Turn the ignition to ON with the engine off. 2. Press the MODE button until the DIC reads "OIL LIFE LEFT/HOLD SET TO RESET" 3. Press and hold the SET button until 100% is displayed. You will hear three chimes and the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message (if illuminated) will go off. Repeat this procedure if the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on. PROCEDURE 2: Aztek's without a DIC 1. Turn the ignition to ON with the engine off. 2. Fully push and release the accelerator pedal slowly three times within five seconds. 3. Turn the key to OFF. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message continues to be illuminated, repeat the procedure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check your owners manual. Auto Zone Parts Store will test your car for free. I was able to clear a code for the IAT sensor, temp sensor located on the air breather. Part only available through dealership for about $72.00. Dealership showed me on the parts breakdown diagrahm where to find it. Turned out the sensor was good, the wires going into the connector have been sheared off. Still trying to come up with a new connector, dealership doesn't support, discontinued! Disconnecting the neg battery lead cleared light once problem fixed.
How can you read the emission codes on a 95 cavalier with a 16 pin hook up but is not obd II?
use the actron scan tool with the obdII conecter but set it up for histoticet mode
you need to reset the oil life through the radio, that will eliminate the light on the dash, until your next oil change is due Weak oil pump or incorrect size or defective filter. Change the oil filter and replace with the proper AC/Delco filter.
Why is check engine light blinking and it smells like gas when the car is on?
When it is blinking, it means that damage is being done to the converter. You smell fuel because it is running so rich. There is possibly a sensor the has gone bad and is telling the computer to add more fuel. There is so much going into the motor than it can burn it and some of the overflow is getting into the converter unburned. I am sure it is also getting into your oil. This can not only thin the oil but damage the lower end of the engine as the fuel acts a solvent, stopping the oil from being a lubricant. Get it checked out at an independent garage and get the oil changed at the same time-asap.
Chysler uses a proximity switch to count the revolutions on the drive axle, which gives you the speedometer input. When the computer loses the input it stores an error code, I believe it's 15, in the computer. The connection is just a simple plug and it's exposed to a lot of heat, cold, and moisture, being way down there on the bottom of the car like that. So after a while it's bound to get a little loose. Maybe it's even got some crud on the contacts. SO if you're inclined to do a little crawling around. Jack the car up. USE JACK STANDS, Of course! and crawl under the passenger side front. Look at where the drive shaft for the passenger wheel comes out of the transmission. There's a neat little doohickie there with a plug coming out of the top. That's your speedometer pickup. Look for broken wires, obviously. If you don't see anything like that, I would recomend getting a can of electrical contact cleaner, and give a liberal hosing to the male and female plugs. It will probably solve the problem.
Maybe not. Go to Auto Zone and have them pull the error codes. Go to a transmission place not a dealer, most are ripoffs. Do some research on transmission places. Try to find a reputable shop. it could be a solenoid that runs about $400.00 for the part but you need to have it hooked up to a computer to get the troubleshoot code first.

What does it mean when the engine light blinks on a Chevy Cavalier?
(add) In diagnosing a misfire condition in my 97 cavalier I found that the MIL light (check engine light) came on with the misfire condition. It (acording to code guide in SnapOn scan tool) flashes when the misfire is serious enough to damage the catalytic converter. Suggesting that the light being on is a problem and a flashing light means drive it to the shop (or not at all)..
Answer2
I am not really sure but I know that if you go to an Autozone store, they have scanners that they can connect to your car and check what the problem is. I did this with my car, but I know that the scanner does not work on really old cars. They can check why the light is that way and they recommend what you can do to fix the problem. This service is offered for free.
I Have a 1999 cavalier if the check engine light comes on and stays on it indicates a problem with the emissions control system.
If the light is flashing it indicates a misfire.
the check engine light is on in my car and i have had it on the scanner and it is caused by a bad seal in the gas cap which is one of many causes so either way have it checked to determine the cause.
here is a link to the owners manual for the 1999 which should be the same for the 1997 for the check engine light.

look at pages 134-137 is explains the meaning of the light.
Why is the check engine light on in a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer?
On a 2000 Merc. it's usually an emissions problem. You can try a water dryer for the fuel and change the PCV valve. If the light remains on, then more than likely it's the EGR valve. Have it tested for free at autozone or Advance auto.
2001 Toyota Camry le engine light comes on what does it mean?
For me, it was a problem with the oxygen sensor. Disconnect your battery and let your car sit overnight. Then re-connect your battery and drive around for 100 miles minimum. If the check engine light does not come back on after 100 miles, then consider the problem fixed. I did this and my car passed inspection after failing the first time because of its initial emissions reading. It's likely a computer glitch that's easily overcome.
For what it's worth, my 01 Camry has a TRD/Kazuma Supercharger installed, which likely contributes to the problem. Do yourself a favor. If you have a supercharger installed, don't put anything but Super Unleaded gas in it.
A check engine light is a problem with the emissions being detected.
Take your car to Autozone, they check all those codes for free and tell you what they mean.
You could lose fuel miliage for one, if it is causing a rich condition. That would also add to the chance of fuel getting into the oil or starting to damage the converter. It could cause a lean conditon as well that could lead to pinging and possible head gasket failure. Hard to say how quick or how bad. Costs can be all over the board. Usually it isn't a big job.
Had this problem on my son's '97 GMC 350, before and after an engine overhaul. (overhaul was not result of oxy sensor failure)
It has four sensors on a "dual exhaust" system. Advance auto parts read the codes and identified the culprit for free, although they warned that the possibility of a malfunctioning converter was NOT ruled out! Resetting the code put the light out...for a few days. The first sensor was replaced during over haul. Two weeks later the light was coming on again and it took some careful interpretation to notice it was the rear sensor on the OTHER bank. The first sensor was OEM @ $75, the second was Adv @ $50.
My 18 yr. old son lives out of state (NM) and I (in Ark)wanted to the on board diagnostics to be remain functional for his "first" vehicle. That was a year ago and all is working well.
