How do you replace the brake light bulb on a 2001 Mazda Protege?

I just did it. You remove two round thingamajigs from the trunk lid protector (round things with round circles in the middle--use a screwdriver to pop up the middle circle, then once that is popped up you can pull the whole thing out). Then remove three more from the trunk mat around the tail light. Then there are three lugnuts to remove from the tail light assembly (a rather tight pinch). Once those are removed, you can pull off the assembly from behind. From there it is easy--the lights twist to unlock and you can pull out the bulb and replace it. Then do everything in reverse to re-assemble.

What is wrong with a 1992 Mazda Protege LX 5-speed that has high screaching sound with first start and if heater is running Sounds like it is coming form the belts and is there a way to loosen them?

Actually, you don't want t loosen them. The noise is because the serpentine belt is slipping. When the vehicle first starts, the alternator works a little extra hard to put electrical energy back into the battery for use next time you need to start the engine. That extra electrical energy requires that the belt deliver more power to the alternator and if things aren't working right the belt will make that sound as it slips. Examine the belt. Are there cracks, missing sections of the ribs? Do you see signs of wear? If so, replace the serpentine belt. If that doesn't solve the problem, you probably have a weak belt tensioner.

Where is the alternator found at in a 1991 Mazda protege DX?

It's right there. you can't miss it, on the top right hand side of the engine block. did you look?

How do you install alternator belt on a 98 Mazda Protege?

if its a 1.6l try the following (a 1.8l is simply a stretched version so it would look the same). On both however I think you need to remove the power steering pump belt first. It is about the same difficulty as the alt belt. Pretty easy unless the p/s pump wont allow you to loosen tension for removal. If this happens, remove the 3 mounting bracket on the front that bolt the pump to the engine and tie it to the side while you replace the alt belt then manuever back into place when you are finshed... Put the car on ramps or otherwise elevate it so that you may easily access 1 bolt from underneath(14mm). Disconnect the battery. Remove the wire attached from the battery (10-12mm). On top of the alt there is two bolts. One is to loosen the alt on the mounting bracket (size is 12mm). The other is to remove tension from the belt for installation and removal (size 12). Neither of these top bolts need removed, just loosen. So, loosen both of these bolts. Crawl underneath and loosen the single bolt underneath the alternator (or at the bottom) enough so that you may easily adjust it from the top. This is a size 14mm and a wrench works best in this tight spot. If it sqeeks it may be too tight. If your battery light come on when you start it then its too loose and you must immediately stop the engine and correct the belt tension. Good luck

Why would a belt for the alternator keep breaking and always squeaks?

Check the alignment of belt in relationship to all pulleys. Check the condition of the pulleys. Also make sure the belt being replace is the recommended size. Auto shops have belt measuring tools to check the size of the belt before installing into your vehicle. You may have had a belt installed that was too large in the first place. The squeaks are a sign of a loose belt or a belt not recommended for your vehicle.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2002 Mazda Protege?

The fuel filter is located in the fuel tank. In order to change it you will need to make sure the tank is as close to empty as possible. You need to then drop the tank and remove the fuel sending unit from the tank, being careful not to damage the units seal.

The filter is located at the bottom of the sending unit. It is a retangle screen. A new filter can be purchased at Auto Zone for about $22.00.

On the 2002 protege 5 you do not need to drop the tank. Lift the rear seat and there is a hatch you unscrew to open and you can remove the fuel pump from there. If your sending unit screws are not rusted this will take about ten min to get at filter. Spray rusted screws with 3in 1 oil to soften rust and remove the screws carefully.

How do you check the transmission fluid level located on a 2001 Mazda Protege?

A 2001 Mazda Protege has a seal system, meaning the car does not have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid. It is best to take it to a dealership to have the fluid tested, but a person can check it by slightly pulling out the plug under the car, and see the condition of the fluid coming out of the plug.

Why does a 1998 Cavalier keep blowing radiator fan fuses?

Could be corrosion in the wiring connection for fan causing excesive current draw. Could be a spot in the wiring where the covering of the wiring has been damaged or worn and the bare wire is touching something metal and causing the fuse to blow. Most likely the radiator cooling fan needs to be replaced because it is drawing too much current and blowing the fuse.

How to install CD player in 2001 Mazda Protege?

How to uninstall your factory/or aftermarket stereo in the 2001 Mazda Protege: first you will need a Radio Removal tool. You can buy this at any parts store. you can remove the cover around the stereo, but that is not necessary - you can just pull the stereo out with this dashboard cover in place. remove the vertical tab edges on your car stereo (if it is the factory stereo that came with the Protege) after these are removed, (you can use the tool you just bought to gently pry off the edges), then you will see the holes to insert the removal tool into. Press the tool ends into the holes on both sides, until you hear them click. It's probably about 1 inch deep. Then, pull on both tool edges, the stereo will just pop out then. unplug the stereo, and connect your new stereo. Push the new stereo system back into the slot making sure it's back in as snugly as the other one. You're done. (you may need an insert, or wiring harness depending on the type of stereo you are putting back in. you can buy these were you buy your stereo.)

Where is the IAT sensor on a 02 Protege?

The Mazda Protege and Protege 5 2.0L engine has an IAT Sensor located just past the factory air filter box. It is a two wire sensor that plugs into the intake tube via a rubber grommet. The three wire plug in the Mass Air Flow Sensor. DO NOT Unplug either of these sensors while the vehicle is running or key turned to accessory. Will cause a flag in the computer and turn on the Check Engine Light. Hope this helps.

Where is the oil pan drain plug for the radiator in a 1995 Mazda Protege?

There is a drain plug on the oil pan that when removed you get oil, and a radiator drain plug that when removed you get antifreeze/water. The radiator drain plug is located at the bottom of the radiator (very front of engine compartment). Typically you can find it by reaching up behind the front bumper and feeling for a large-ish wingnut. They are usually plastic, about the size of a quarter or half-dollar, and can be removed by hand.

How do you remove the radio from a 1998 Mazda Protege and does the dash have to come out?

You need a special tool. It is like steal "U". The other thing that I did is just pull it out with all your energy. You will brake some supports on right and left sides but that radio is garbage.

Where is the transmission fluid container located on a 1997 Mazda Protege?

Unlike washer solvent, power steering fluid and coolant, transmissions do not have a separate container. The fluid is contained in the transmission itself. Look for a dipstick to check the level similar to how the oil is checked. I am assuming you have an automatic. YOu need to BClear.

How do you remove the rear brake drums from a 1995 Mazda Protege?

How do you replace the front struts on a 1999 Mazda Protege?

tire off, remove the 2 17mm bolts with nuts, then under the hood there is 3 bolts on each side in the strut area. you need some type of compression device. if you are not aware of this type of tool, i would ask to be shown by a tech. this type of compression power released is capible of almost or possible killing you if you get struck by a spring. the strut and spring come out as one peice until the top 17mm bolt combining them both is unhinged You wouldn't be able to without special equipment to remove the springs. Go to http://protege5.ugly.net/02-13.PDF That's the manual with instructions for removing struts. I believe the P5 shares many parts with Protege. At least you'll get a rough idea what you're dealing with.

How do you bypass a seized AC compressor to get the Power Steering working on a 1995 Mazda Protege?

I just asked somebody the same question and his answer was to re-route the belt. =edit= I had this exact problem happen to me. I was told there was an adapter to install, but that it was an easy fix. This was after a mechanic tried to get me to pay for the AC, insisting there was no other way to get the PS back.
