Check Engine Light

The same thing happened to me this week with my '96 Explorer . Battery light came on, would not go off. But my amp meter is showing that my alternator is doing its job. I left the lift gate open for about 2 hrs and when I went to start it the battery would not turn the engine over. Jumped it and didn't have a problem...but that battery light was still on. If the serpentine were slipping enough to cause the battery light to stay on it would also be squealing non-stop, so I never thought that. I disconnected the negative battery cable and drove it for about 4 miles with no problems, I figured the alternator was not the problem. Installed a new battery from another vehicle, battery light still stayed on. I then got a piece of scotch brite and die-electric grease and disconnected every ground wire and strap I could find including batt cables. Battery light still on. I then had my son sit in the drivers seat and instructed him to let me know if/when the battery light flickered. With the truck running I started wiggling wires and connectors, when I got to the back of the alternator he told me it blinked. I shut it off, disconnected the neg battery cable, popped the connectors off the back of the alternator cleaned and greased all the connectors. Started the truck the battery light was off and has stayed off.

the engine check light on ANY car means there is somthing wrong with the engine probably that it has overheated Yes, it can mean that your car is overheating, but it also can be one of many emmisions problems. Your best bet is either take it to a good mechanic, or buy a good book, such as a Haynes Manual for it, and it will explain what you need to check/replace. i have a 98 grand prix gtp, and when mine came on i went to the local auto parts store and they were able to check it for free and got the codes, ended up being my egr valve

What does your owner's manual say to use? If low silicate is not listed then drain and refill with the proper coolant.

take it to autozone they will check for free. wolverine Probably some problem with the smog controls. Probably nothing too major. If the service engine light is flashing, it's probably major.

service the engine...... or disconnect the battery for a few moments to clear the memory on your cars computer..... please be safe and do it in a way that you do not hurt your self. most of the time the service engine light comes on, there may be damage to the engine, the computer cant tell you when something is about to go wrong, it can only tell you after it has.....,..

TAKE THE CAR TO A NEARBY ADVANCED AUTO ZONE. TELL THEM THAT THE LIGHT IS ON AND YOU WANT THEM TO CHECK IT . THEY WILL COME OUT AND HOOK SOMETHING UP TO IT AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THE LIST OF WHAT IT COULD BE THEN HAVE THEM CLEAR IT. Your computer has detected a problem with the emmissions control system that is affecting the way your engine runs, have it checked with an OBDII code reader, many parts stores will do it for free and it will tell you what needs attention.

Disconnect the battery for about 10 seconds, then reconnect.(Note...when the service engine light comes on, it means that the computer has set a fault code indicating there may be an engine sensor bad, you may want to have that checked out and have someone read the code before you reset it.

Assuming that whatever caused the check engine light to come on has been corrected, what has worked for me is to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected an hour or so long enough for any residual current to leave the circuit board then connect the battery back up and it should be off. If it's not take it into a parts store such as Autozone that will do a free code check for you to find out what is causing the check engine light to come on.

First, how is the batt? New, old? Most charging/starting systems have a regulator for the alternator so it will not overcharge the batt or produce more power than the car needs. If this is working incorrectly it could keep damaging your alternator. There could also be a parasitic draw of power from your car causing the alternator to run continuously at a high rate. Do you have an aftermarket stereo hooked up in the car? Have your engine light scanned at a garage. The code stored in your car can help lead the mechanic to the source of your problem. I am an auto tech, but without actually seeing your car this is the best advice I can give.

The car needs to go on to diagnostic equipment for the codes to be read, the fault needs to be diagnosed and remedial action taken the codes can then be cleared & the warning light can then be reset.

Check engine or sometimes called MIL (malfunction indicator light) is mainly related to emissions. The TOP reasons are oxygen sensors and smog related items. Unplug your negative battery post for a minute or two and see how long it takes for the light to come on again. On mine it was a sensor and came on within about 3-5 miles of city driving.

Egr flow sensor big problem with ford. Need to check o2 switching and fuel trims with scanner. Ft should be+or -10% switching and o2 should switch between .1&.9volts or 100-900 milli volts depending on scanner. It is unlikely that only one bank can be rich and lean. Bank 1 is passenger side. Cyl 1front on that side. Coil hi failure item on fords and can affect o2 readings
