Oxygen Sensors

You can jump the starter directly to see if it turns, but most of the time it is the solinoid that has gone bad and you usually have to buy a new starter anyway since they come together. First you need to get some jumper cables and connect the positive from the battery to the positive connection on the back of the starter, it will be easy to find because its the one fat wire going from the solinoid on top of the starter to the actual motor. Second, turn the ignition and if the car starter spins and the car starts up then you know you need a new starter. There is two maybe three bolts that connect your starter. First detach batter cables, then the cables to the solinoid, then unbolt the starter and bolt the new one right up and re-attach all the cables begining with the starter.

The primary response is: Stop driving the car and have the head gasket replaced. You are risking extensive engine damage and increased cost. One of the damaging leaks is internal: oil in the water, water in the oil. Even if you have an external leak, you risk running out of water or oil and causing engine failure. An external oil leak may cause an engine fire. So, unfortunately, I can not recommend you continue to drive the car. Without knowing more and just guessing at costs, you might pay $500 now or pay $3000 later for a complete engine replacement. The work can be extensive and I would recommend having it done by a mechanic qualified to do the job. When the gasket is replaced, the HEAD should be checked at a machine shop and repaired as necessary.

The diagnostic connector is located on the engine near the starter. However, there are four connectors in that location and without pictures it would be difficult to determine which is the proper one.

The only reason for accessing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) would be if the check engine light is coming on. The testing and repair of electronic components on newer car is not to be taken lightly and definitely not without a repair manual at your elbow.

Now, be a good boy and take it to a qualified mechanic.

oxygen sensor is threaded into a well in the exhaust pipe down next to the transmission. 7/8 wrench. spray with penetrating oil first wait 15 min soak before unscrewing. disconnect wire first open end wrench or special O2 sensor socket to not crush wire while unscrewing. replace with Bosch OEM, nothing else will restore your efficiency. put anti-sieze compound on threads. do not blow this off, or next sensor job will be EXPENSIVE. cheap O2 sensors are worthless.

Dont forget that you have two O2 sensors....upstream AND downstream.

Oxygen sensor #1 screws in to the exhaust manifold just before the headpipe. The hardest part about replacing an oxygen sensor is screwing it out. Sometimes they are a little siezed in from the heat. after you get the old one out, you'll need to make sure you know how to electrically connect the new one. Some of the replacement oxygen sensors have a plug and others need to be spliced in. Just make sure you connect the wires correctly, following the color codes or the directions that came with the replacment sensor. It's relatively easy and a good first auto repair project.

It should be around or close to the 02 sensor. Check for a part dangling by a wiring and connector.

There are two O2 sensors. One under the car behind the passenger side tire as you lay along the car. You'll see it stick out of the exhaust pipe, it has wires coming out of it. The other you'll find if you crawl under from the front, it is just ahead of the Catalytic Converter, along the same pipe.

The Oxygen Sensor on a 1989 Cherokee 4.0L is on the exhaust pipe on the left side of the engine just below the exhaust manifold. You can see it from above but you must replace it from below. It is pretty easy to reach. I recently changed mine and it took only 10 minutes using an O2 sensor wrench.

A 2000 Ford Focus oxygen sensor diagram can be obtained from most Ford dealerships. The diagram can also be found in most Ford repair manuals.

Since oxygen sensors are always in the exhaust system, that's where you'd find it. There are at least two and as many as four on any late model vehicle with a V-8.

YOU CAN'T. The computer system MUST be able to read it so the engine will run RIGHT.

To sense some given value of the engines operation.

The right side one is the passenger side one. Upstream means that it's on the engine side of the catalytic converter. Follow the exhaust pipe down from the passenger side exhaust manifold until you get to what looks a little like a spark plug screwed into the exhaust pipe with two wires attached. That's your upstream, right side O2 sensor. If you get to the catalytic converter without finding it, you've either missed it, or there isn't one equipped.

When you start the car, the hot exhaust condenses on the interior of the cold exhaust system. This is normal for a few minutes until the exhaust system warms up. If the water smells and taste sweet, and you are continually adding coolant, you may have a blown head gasket. If this is the case, do not continue to drive the vehicle as serious damage will be done to the engine.

I just replaced a faulty sensor on my 2004 GMC, and although not all trucks are the same, here is the correct answer for my application and probably most similar vehicles (Tahoe, Sierra, Yukon, Escalade, etc) with the same drive train 4.3/4.8/5.3l. This should apply for any vehicle 99-06 on the full size truck platforms.


The system is setup almost like you would expect:
Bank 1 Sensor 1 - Driver's side, before catalytic converter
Bank 1 Sensor 2 - Driver's side, after catalytic converter
Bank 2 Sensor 1 - Passenger side, before catalytic converter
Bank 2 Sensor 2 - Passenger side, after catalytic converter


I searched around forums to find this answer, but no one was for sure and couldn't find it in their Chilton's or similar manuals. I disconnected each one, used my engine code reader to see which error was thrown after disconnecting them successively, and through process of elimination came up with the above information.

Unplug it at the wiring connector, and then get a wrench that fits it and screew it out of the exhaust pipe.

Do you know which sensor is bad? Have you had the computer scanned? most of them just unplug from the wiring harness and you unscrew the sensor out of the exhaust pipe either before or after the catalytic converter. If they are bad you can generally shake them and you will hear them rattle due to the porcelin breaking.

The oxygen sensor is usually mounted in the exhaust manifold pretty close to where the exhaust pipe bolts on.

It is screwed into the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine.
