Locks and Latches

Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

How do you fix it if your steering wheel is locked and you cannot start your 2004 focus zx3?

If you can not unlock the steering wheel after turning the key in the ignition, or are having trouble starting the car i.e. not being able to turn the key. The issue maybe your ignition cylinder. I had this issue my self, 03 zx3 . They easiest fix would be to goto your local ford dealer and have a new ignition cylinder put in and while your at it have a spare key made. They're plenty of after market parts or Diy but after doing so you will need a key for the ignition and a separate key for the doors. Dealers can program your new key to work with every thing.

How can you remove the exterior door handles on a 1998 Honda civic?

Pop off the speaker grill and remove the three screws securing the panel to the door frame. You do not have to remove the screws holding the speaker to the panel. Remove the window crank. There is a "U" shaped retaining spring holding the handle to the spindle. It can be removed with a special tool or just by pressing in on the panel and loosening the clip with a small flat blade screwdriver. Remove the screws in the arm rest and above the interior door handle lever.

Pull the panel from the door - be careful of the speaker wires - carefully undo the quick connect.

From the top corner, pull down on the plastic sheet.

Remove the square white plastic box that is used as a guide for the control bars.

Locate the exterior handle mechanism. There are 2 10mm bolts that hold the handle to the door frame. Remove them with a ratchet and extension.

Pop the retaining clip (it's green for the left door) free from the lock cylinder control rod, then pull the rod from the back of the lock cylinder.

Covering the back of the lock cylinder is a metal plate. Holding the plate to the cylinder is another "U" shaped spring clip that can be pulled down with a flat blade screwdriver.

After removing this clip, the metal plate will separate from the cylinder. The culinder can then be pulled free from the inside and the handle from the outside.

Reverse the procedure to reinstall.

How do you fix or unstick the latch mechanism at the back part of the sliding door on a 1992 Astro It got pushed up in the closed position while open and now you can't shut the door?

This happens occasionally on my '96 van, especially on uneven ground. Look at the very bottom of the lower slider. There is a small piece of metal which will pivot fore and aft. Push it in and the door should release and close. The metal piece is only about 1" X 1/4 " and is silver colored. Just keep trying to move all the little parts at the bottom of the slider and you'll eventually find the one that moves. Annie

How do you open the hood of a '94 Honda Accord with a broken hood release cable?

Finding information about this kind of thing seems to be very difficult on the big wide web... I have a '96 Honda Accord, myself, and after an evening spent taping the wires that were pulled down as the result of the front left tire losing it's tread (very nasty... ripped out the tire well, broke wires, shredded the tube for the washer fluid, and pulled wires down from the back of the well.) I discovered I had only one last pull on the hood release before that broke, too, which I wasted when the tire shredded because I was trying to check something that I don't remember what it is now. Anyway, the only thing I can think of right now is to use a knife that your wife won't kill you to ruin to get in and lift the latch that's under the front of the hood (you know, the one that you have to lift to open the hood even when the hood release latch is working...) There's also a possibility that cutting the cable near the front of the tire well and leaving enough of the inner cable bare to yank on it with pliers might release it, since all it is is a steel cable within that rubber sheath that yanks a latch back and releases the hood... At the worst, I might have to try to get in past that front plastic grill (which would most likely mark the end of the grill), and pull it open there. If I think to later on, I'll post what I ended-up having to do, but if I forget, you can reach me at ("d-t-s" at "swbell" dot "net") to find out what I did.

Is there anyway of disabling the auto door locks on an 05 Trailblazer EXT?

Maybe. Read your owner's manual.

The owners manual tells you how to change the auto door locks. It has to do with pulling your turn signal lever back towards yourself and holding it there for a certain length of time or until you get a beep to move on to the next step, which i cannot recall at this time what it is? Sorry! But your manual does have it!

Is there a problem with the Honda Odyssey door locks Front powerlock will lock by without pushing remote button Occasionally back power doors will not operate at all?

I just had a problem with my 2007 Honda Odyssey where the front driver-side door half-locked (became stuck), when it wasn't supposed to lock at all. It took three fire trucks, two ambulances, and two police cars to unlock the door and my 2 1/2 year old son was locked in there in 95 degree weather!

How can you replace a broken door handle on a 1997 Toyota Camry?

I replaced the outside driver's door handle on my 1993 Camry today and tried to document the process as best I could. I am not an auto mechanic and do not even know the correct names for all the tools, but here's a link you can copy to the file, which is a Word document with pictures: members.aol.com. If you cannot get it this way, e-mail me and I will send it. Good luck!

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but had to say it: You are amazing !! The way you have described the whole process with pictures is terrific. My most sincere thanks and 'wow'!! to you on behalf of everyone who has benefitted from your tip.

I found another trick to removing the trim around the inside door handle. The above article refers to putting a screwdriver UNDER the door handle and pushing down (that is pushing down the tip of the screwdriver) ... to release a "secret latch". That's the first step. The second step (which is not in the article) is to insert the scredriver ABOVE the door handle ... vertically above the spot in the article. Then gently press the screwdriver handle down. With the screwdriver acting as a lever, the tip of the screwdriver will push UP on the top part of the trim. That will lift the trim up off a small pin on the handle mechanism. With both the bottom and top of the trim piece now "unlatched", slide the trim toward the back of the car, while you open the inside door handle (as mentioned in the article). The trim will come right off. Be sure to slide the trim toward the back of the car, as you move the trim away from the door panel. (There is a "hooked" piece of plastic on the back of that trim that prevents you from just pulling it out perpendicular to the door panel.) 'Hope these fine points help.

PS. My 1996 Camry had 2 screws on the bottom of the door that also were holding the interior door panel in place.

How do you fix a hood latch on a 2003 VW Jetta that is stuck shut and the release lever doesn't work and you can hear the cable move when you use it but no unlatching action?

To fix a hood latch on a 2003 VW Jetta that is stuck shut, the car should be put up on a hoist. A long pole will be needed to then trip the hood latch. Then the cable can be repaired and the car lowered.

How do you fix the door handle on a 98 Volvo S70 - it opens from inside but not from the outside?

Remove inner door panel for access and observation

There is a small plastic (nylon?) part in the latch mechanism that breaks. It is meant to deactivate the door lock. When broken, the door remains locked, which is why you can open it with the inner door handle but not the outer one. The latch mechanism is not designed to be serviced, but with some ingenuity it can be disassembled and put back together. I found the pieces of the part in question (sometimes called the "Red Devil" because this part was occasionally made of red plastic. Mine was white like all the other plastic components) lying in the bottom of the door and put it back together with Crazy Glue and drilled holes into which I put steel wire and more Crazy Glue. It's held up for the past 7 months. An excellent link for this process: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/v70latch2.php . From what I've found out, a new latch assembly costs about $135.00. In early 2009 Erie Vovo (that's not a typo) quoted me $75 for a used one with a lifetime warranty.

How can a 95 gmc be opened with keys locked inside?

How do you find out the combination to a combination lock?

So you take the lock and the metal kinda loop part you grab it with your middle finger and kinda push with your ring and index fingers. Then you twist the knob SLOWLY when you come across the right number you will feel the metal loop you are grabbing on to loosen up a little bit that's the first number. Do that two more times and make sure you KNOW that when the lock loosens up it is real. After you feel and know the numbers tug on the metal loop a little (not to hard not to soft) and the lock should unlock! I hope this is useful and it works out fine.

How do you fix a broken hood release on a Ford Windstar?

AnswerIf it is just the plastic handle broken, behind that is the cable that opens the hood. Just grab the cable with a pair of pliers and pull. You can probably just replace the inside handle and not have to run a new cable. AnswerI assume the handle broke off in the car. You will have to by a new cable/handle assembly ($30.00) so I would: Cut the remaining handle and end off the cable housing so you can get at the inner cable core. Then take a vise grip and pull on the inner core to release hood latch. New housing/cable assemblies are available at your Ford dealer.
