What happens if your water pump goes out?

There will be no water pumped into your engine to cool it, then you might need a new engine.

Where is the water sending unit on a 350 Chevy engine?

It is screewed into the driver's side head between the first 2 spark plugs in the front of the head.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 Oldsmobile Ciera?

If it is a 3.1 it is not hard to do i did one in 20 min. If you stand in front of the car on the passanger side follow bottom radiator hose that is the water pump. There are 4 or 5 bolts holding the pully on do not take belt off yet. Break looses the bolt's first. Pull the pully off there will be at least 4 bolts holding the housing on remove them you will loose about a glass of water. Pull the old water pump out and put new one in make sure you use blue silicone or something similar for water put silicone on water pump make sure holes line up on the gasket when you put it on the pump let sit for 5 min. put silicone on other side of gasket put it right one don't let site reassemble everything and your good to go.

How do you remove bolts on small pulley of water pump?

The best way is to "double nut" them. Thread one nut halfway down the bolt, then thread another down against that one. Use a wrench on the first (bottom) nut to back the bolt out.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1997 Chevy Malibu 2.4L 4 cylinder?

If you are smart, do not attempt!!!!!!! It is located under the exhaust manifold, attached to the timing housing, and is driven by the timing chain. You most disconnect one of only two engine mounts to get to it. We have quite a few tools and do most jobs on our own cars, and I can't count how many times I have been the store buying tools for this job, and we arent done yet. Pay someone to do it if you can afford to. GOod Luck. It would take a professional a while. Make sure the work is warranteed. Go to a good shop, cause if they screw up, it will be expensive. They disconnect alot of expensive sensors to get to the stupid water pump. While they are at it, have them put in a new thermostat, the water pump going out caused wear and tear on it, and they are relatively cheap, but they are right next to the water pump, so guess how much they cost to put in. Have fun. Hope that helped.

Answergood luck. i couldn't do it myself and i know quite a lot about cars, but even i couldn't handle this one. As a matter of fact i work at a car dealership, and they told me to send it out to another mechanic's shop because it was over 7 hours of labor. In the end my bill was $979.00 because they need to take off the timing chain to get to it. when that comes out, u might as well buy a new one since the old one is all stretched out. have fun!!

How do you replace the water pump on a 2000 Dodge Durango?

First drain the radiator. Then you'll need to remove the fan and shroud. Then remove the belts, water pump pulley, and hoses. Make note of how the belts run. When removing the water pump, note which length bolts came from which holes so you can get them back on right. Also note the position of any brackets attached to the pump.

Be sure to scrape the mating surface on the engine clean, especially old gasket material. Match the new pump up to the old one to make sure they're identical. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant(Permatex, etc) to the new pump, then mate the gasket to it. Slide a couple bolts into their holes to keep the gasket positioned correctly. Apply sealant to the engine side of the gasket, then carefully mate the pump to the engine and bolt it in. Be sure to also bolt back on any attached brackets. Do not overtighten the bolts as you'll crush the gasket. If you have a torque wrench, the bolts should be tightened to 40in-lbs on the 4.7L V8, or 30in-lbs on the V6 and all other V8's. 23in-lbs if you're unlucky enough to have a 4-cylinder.

Reinstall everything else you took off, check the belt tension before replacing the fan and shroud. Fire it up and check for leaks.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1992 Chrysler LeBaron?

Water Pump ReplacementI have not personally tried to replace a WP, but from what I understand, you must remove both the alternator and the air conditioner in order to even remove the WP housing. After you get that done, you still need to take apart the housing and then try to put it all back together.

ABOVE Response Not Quite.

The water pump on a 3.0 liter V6 lebaron is located internally. It is not just an accessory on the outside running off of your serpentine belt. It runs off of the Timing belt, and never sees the light of day. How Sad. :( Anyway, In order to change the water pump you must remove all pulleys and accsesories located out side the engine, Includes A/C componants as well. Support the engine, remove side engine mount. Remove crankshaft pulley and harmonic balencer. Once you have access to the timing covers, you can then remove the covers and unbolt the water pump. Change the timing belt while you change your water pump too. It will save you fr next time. (Make sure you clean off the old water pump gaskets while you are in here. If you don't you will leak water until you change it again.)

After reinstalatoin of all parts you will most likely have to RE-TIME the engine, as it most likely be off. You should tune it up here as well. (Plugs and Wires, ETC...) With the new quiet water pump and tune'd up car you'll think it was brand new.

How do you replace the water pump on a 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L straight six?

First drain the water out and disconnect the battery then remove the fan and fan shroud and serpineteen belt then disconect the lower radiator hose and remove the pulley off the water pump then remove the heater hose that's connected to a pipe off the water pump and then remove water pump.

What does it mean when you start 97 neon and water comes out from under engine area is it the water pump hoses or radiator?

It is my guess that it is the water pump. There are no hoses connected to the water pump, so check the two rad hoses and if they are dry, it is likely the water pump. It could also be the head gasket or (unlikley) even the head)

Where is the coolant temperature sensor on a 2001 Hyundai sonata?

Answer

The coolant temperature sensor is located in the coolant housing on the transmission end of the engine under the ignition coil.

In my experience, most of the problems with this coolant temperature sensor are intermittent, so attempts to troubleshoot usually prove fruitless. If you'd like, you can view the schematics for the vehicle in the ETM section at www.hmaservice.com. You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires Internet Explorer.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 Nissan Maxima dohc?

acquire (2) 3" long coarse thread M8 bolts, set aside. remove main belt, belt tensioner pulley, belt tensioner bracket. then remove the timing chain tensioner cover located below-left of the the passenger-side motor mount, and the water pump cover located just below-right of the same motor mount. push the tensioner piston in and lock the piston in place by using a smaill nail, or push pin inserted in the hole.. youll see it. then rotate the engine counter-clockwise 20-30 degrees to free up chain tension on the water pump. Remove the bolts holding in the pump. Now using the 2 M8 bolts, thread them into 2 of the same top and bottom bolt holes evenly to pop out the pump. be sure to keep an eye on the chain as it can hold the pump in and hamper your efforts in getting the pump out. Make sure to lube up the 2 o rings on the new pump real slick, and pop it back in place. installation is the same, only backwards and without the M8 bolts. dont force the pump in... good luck!

How do you remove the water pump on a 1994 Pontiac Trans AM OHC?

Drain the coolant from the radiator. The plug is at the bottom of the radiator. Remove the air intake and mass air flow sensor to get better access to the water pump. Disconnect all the hoses leading to the water pump, you can do this with pliars by crimpint the retaining clips and moving them back. You can then pry off the hoses. disconnect the coolant temp sensor wire from the sensor. bottom left. of the water pump. You need "if I remember right" a 14 mm socket or wrench to remove the water pump bolts. Might need to pry the pump off, it could be stuck, but a little pressure should take it off.

Do you use a sealant when replacing a water pump on a 2001 Silverado 5.3?

I my self would not, That's what gaskets are for. unless there is some inperfections were the gaskets go,if there is use a small amount of sealant only. and be sure its OEM sealer. And install gaskets.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1993 Dodge Caravan?

2.5L engine. Remove the a/c compressor and alt, then unbolt the whole water pump assembly from the engine. you will then reusing the half of the pump that bolts to the block.

3.0L The "HARD ONE" Remove the frt engine mount/timing covers and timing belt to get to the pump.

3.3/3.8L the easy one. remove the frt wheel and inner fender sheild. remove the belt and pulley. unbolt the pump.

Where is the water pump located on a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant?

The water pump is located in the shroud that houses the timing belt. This is why the pump is changed when you get a new timing chain.

Why would coolant leak from way under the car?

To the individual interested in automobile leaks....

Engine coolant can leak out of a car when a hole is present in the Water Coolant System that is responsible for maintaining engine block temperatures, which causes a loss of fluid commonly called antifreeze. Our radiators and water pumps on cars are supposed to be closed-systems. Since engine coolant is a liquid, all liquids are subject to the forces of gravity with any leak observed at the bottom of a car from the liquid sticking to the metal parts around the hole and dripping from the lowest part of the component that is damaged, corroded, or broke open leaking, including the water hoses.

A radiator that is on an old car can leak normally from the buildup of corrosion, causing rust reducing material strength.

If the leak is from an old car, the most likely cause is Environmental.

How hard is it to change the water pump and thermostat on a 1974 Chevy Nova V8 350?

In short it's fairly strait forward to replace the thermostat and the water pump on any Chevy 350. First off you must drain the radiator. To do this simply turn the "petcock" located either on the bottom left or right hand side facing the engine on the radiator. Note.....lefty loosey righty tighty doesnt apply in this case as the petcock will turn to the right in order to drain the radiator. Take the cap off to vent but be sure the radiator is NOT HOT. Otherwise, allow it to cool before removing the cap. You can get a pretty nasty burn. Once the radiator is empty remove the TOP radiator hose from the engine. This should only involve removing a hose clamp and then gently twisting the hose until it breaks free from the intake manifold. Once the radiator hose is removed from the engine you are about 2 inches from the thermostat. It's just under where you took the hose off of the engine. Two blots on either side of the thermostat housing will free the housing and reveal the thermostat. When you buy a new one make sure you also get a new gasket. Clean the area thoroughly of the old gasket. (There may be another smaller diameter hose attached to the thermostat housing. If so simply remove it for the installation then reassemble once the thermostat housing is back in place.Use caution to not drop anything into the engine such as pieces of the old gasket. If necessary cover the exposed hole with a clean rag to help prevent contaminating the cooling system. Reverse the dissasembly process to reinstall. It helps to use an rtv blue sealer to keep the gasket in place during the reassembly. Make sure to note the location of the thermostat Then install one of the bolts into the water pump and lower it into place with one hand while ligning up the bolt with the appropriate hole. Once you have one bolt started install another bolt in the opposite side and hand tighten them to hold the water pump in place. Install the other two bolts then tighten in an alrernating pattern. (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) Do so in multiple passes as to help promote a good seal on the gaskets. Once tight you can then star the reassembly in reverse of how you removed everything. Last off first on. Once you have everything installed be sure to close the radiator petcock and then refill the radiator. It will take some time to drain into the engine so you will have to repeat the filling process a number of times before the system is purged of all air. Once you have at least 2 gallons of 50/50 antifreeze mix in the radiator you can then start the engine for short periods with the radiator cap off to help "burp" the cooling system of excess air. Once full, run the engine up to normal operating temprature with the radiator cap on. Usually about 15-20 minutes will do the trick. Then check for leaks around all the hoses and fittings you removed and reinstalled. If there are leaks then retighten.

What is the part between the water pump and the block called on a 1987 Ford Bronco with a 302 engine?

timing cover, it bolts to the block and covers the timing chain and gears, then the water pump bolts to it.

Where is the water pump located on a 1989 Chevrolet Corsica V6?

The water pump is located behind the water pump pulley. The water pump pulley is the smooth pulley at the top closest to the front of the car. It is held in place by 4 bolts with 8mm heads. The pump is held in place with 5 bolts. Warm the engine to operating temperature before removing the bolts or they may break off causing you greif.

How do you set the cam timing on a v6 2.7 liter Dodge Intrepid?

The marks on the chain and the sprockets are set in such a way that the chain is installed at 50 deg after tdc. This is done so that the pistons are not at tdc where they could hit the valves while trying to install the chain. The marks are the only thing after tdc. When the chain is installed properly, the valves and pistons will be in proper time and the valves will be closed when the piston is at tdc. All you have to do is ine up the plated links on the chain with the proper marks on the sprockets.

When the marks on the chain and the marks on the sprockets are lined up the piston is after tdc. This is how it is supposed to be.

Buy a service manual and follow the directions step by step.

The piston is not At top when marks are lined up.

On a 2.7L, when the timing marks are lined up the piston is not at top dead center. It is about 50 deg past top.

AnswerWhen you removed the pump, how much tension was in your chain? That chain stretches real bad due to engine overheating, even though it will be normal on your gauges in the cab. follow the procedure below, but if your chain has stretched, replacee it. Its best to replace the chain anyway. Also check the oilpump when you check for spark and its quite imperative that you keep the right amout of oil all the time. set both your camshafts to 90degrees with the cylinder head and cover mating surfaces, using the little punched holes as your guides. Set cylinder number one to TDC and align the chain marks on the gears as follows:

The two colored pieces of chain go on the right, and the the left gear and the crankshaft sprocket get one each. Reset your tensioner before reinstalling it or it will fail dismally. Rotete the engine using the crankshaft about three complete revolutions until the timing marks are back to were you set them. Before you close your engine, install the sparkplugs into the boots, but not into the block, then crank your engine and check for spark. If they spark you are good to go. If not remove the camshaft position sensor and try again. If they spark without the sensor in, the rotate you right camshafts by 180 degrees and try again. when working fine, installation is the reverse of the removal.

note, be sure your tensioner is fully reset or you will trhow away your engine like an ex-spouse. signed: mr Houston. mr Houston.

The half moon cut out on the crank sprocket aligns with the arrow on the oil pump housing. If you don't have service manual with a sufficent picture you need to go get one. This timing chain is very complicated.

After changing the thermostat and water pump on your 1989 Jeep Cherokee it still heats up what could be wrong?

The radiator may be clogged preventing water flow into the engine. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Start the engine and let it warm up to the point where it should open the thermostat. Observe the flow of water in the radiator. If you can't see the water moving, the flow is being impeded somehow. Also suspect the coolant temperature sensor (located next to the thermostat housing).

you may have an air pocket in the coolant lines preventing proper flow of the coolant.be sure to flush the system thoroughly to remove any airpockets. There is a bolt on the thermostat housing which you can remove (when cool) that by-passes the thermostat, allowing you to fill coolant. Use a small funnel and fill to top, then replace the bolt. This will allow the coolant in the block to reach water pump, heating thermostat, and circulating the coolant through radiator, etc.

        • Also, remove the overflow bottle, and using a stiff wire (coat hanger in my case) make sure the pipe connecting the bottle to the system is clear. My case I had a calcium-like blockage stopping flow and creating air/steam in system.

I just changed the water pump, thermostat, flushed the system. Make sure no air is in the closed presurized coolant system, air in the system stops the water from moving around.

Usually the fan clutch deteriates after the water pump went.

It could also be that your oil pump is on the way out. Do you have good oil pressure via the pressure gauge? Are any "check engine" lights coming on? Good luck, Badgirl.

check the coolant bottle for cracks etc. and also check the pressure capon the bottle. the cap can be no good and appear to be fine. best advice.....go buy a new pressure cap from the dealer and see what happens. i changed almost my whole cooling system before i did the bottle and cap.....nothing got it to run cool until i bought and installed them!!!

I, too replaced thermostat, radiator cap, ect, even the cap on the coolant bottle. Finally, I had to replace the plastic bottle itself. Jeep dealer told me they are plastic, and therefore they warp with age.
