Water Pumps

Fairly easy. remove the serpentine belt. Remove the pulley from the water pump. You need the sockets that fit those bolts and the sockets that fit the pump's mounting bolts. Get gasket sealer too.

The water pump is located behind the timing belt cover plate. In order to replace the pump you must drain the radiator fluid by disconnecting the lower hose (not easy and very messy). Next step is to remove the cooling fan assembly (be sure to disconnect the battery to prevent the fan from accidently turning on). Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the tension pully, remove the the tension pulley, remove the large plate (approx. 9 10mm bolts to remove. Next step is to remove the water pump (three 10mm bolts. Replacing the water pump is easy, getting the timing belt back on is the difficult part. I would continue with the re-assembly but I didn't do it correctly, so the car is sitting in my garage because I believe either the crankshaft of valve pully moved why re-assembling and the car won't start. Calling in a professional and will update answer once this has been resolved.

Real method -

4 hours standard labor, OEM part - 5003085AA, around $125

1. Drain cooling system

The first and most obvious method would be to disconnect the lower radiator hose.

2. Remove upper radiator cross-member

4 screws, contains hood latch.

3. Remove radiator cooler fan module.

4 screws, 2 clips, 2 "air shields"

4.remove timing cover

11 screws for upper, 1 screw for lower.

5. Allign camshaft timing marks

Upper right gear, mark on gear, between marks on rear timing cover. Do not loosen the camshaft sprockets.

6. Remove the timing belt tensioner and timing belt

plunger, bottom left. When the plunger is compressed into the tensioner body, install a pin through the body and plunger to retain the position of the plunger until it is reinstalled. You will need to compress the plunger in a vise. Make sure you mark the running direction of the timing belt, it matters.

7. Remove water pump mounting bolts

center pulley, three bolts

8. Clean all O-ring surfaces on new pump and cover.

9. Wet new O-ring with water. (Keep the new O-ring free of oil or grease)

10. Reinstall pump to housing and tighten pump mounting bolts to 12 Nm or 105 inch lbs. (not ft. lbs.)

11. Make sure sprocket marks are still alligned.

Install timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket going counter-clockwise. Maintain tension on the belt as it is positioned around the tensioner pulley.

12. Holding the tensioner pulley against the belt, install the tensioner into the housing and tighten to 28 Nm or 250 inch lbs (again, not ft. lbs.) When the tensioner is in place, pull the retaining pin to allow the tensioner to extend.

13. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket 2 revolutions and check the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. The marks should line up in their respective locations. If they don't, try again.

14. Refill the cooling system, start it up, and bleed the air out with a 6-point box wrench or a 6-point socket.

Advance Auto Parts show 2 water pumps for that 3.5L engine. One has 3 bolts and the other has 6 bolts holding it on. You will probably have to remove the old one to see which one you have.

If you are coming from a city or county water main you do not need a water tank or pump system as the main should already be pressurized.

the water pump is next to the plastic bucket where the hot water will go, go to the store buy a new one and there should be a bolt in the middle of the pump loosen that up take it out put the new one in put the belt on and then add 50/50

1st. Why did you change the Pump? Was it leaking or just making noise? If it was leaking, maybe that was not your leak. Maybe you have a hose with a pin hole spraying fluid at the pump. Did you use any gasket sealant on the new pump gasket? Are you sure the you installed the correct bolts in the correct holes. Some are longer than others in most applications. Use a good strong light and round extension mirror to inspect the area (WITH THE MOTOR STOPPED) where the leak is suspected.also check the timing chain cover gasget fluid also goes in that area and looks like the pump is leaking.

Engine overheats When a car or truck overheats idling, in town, on the highway, while towing, etc. it is important to find out the reason to prevent engine damage. First, with the engine cold, make sure the radiator is full of coolant; if it is low, fill it and keep the radiator cap off while the engine idles to insure all air is bled out of the system ( air trapped in the system can cause overheating also). Check the coolant level daily; if the coolant goes down without visible leaks, it may be a head gasket starting to leak which will also cause the heater to blow cold air due to the lack of available coolant. If the coolant stays full, but the car continues to overheat, the next step is to replace the thermostat in the engine and flush the cooling system if that has not been done over the last few years.Buy a thermostat at a parts store and a PRESTONE flush kit which has excellent directions on the package.After completing these steps and the vehicle still overheats, have your cooling fan sensor/switch ( if equipped)checked out to insure it is coming on. Water pumps are seldom the cause as they are mechanical and will continue to work until their bearings give out. Finally, the radiator itself is often the problem as it tends to build up corrosion internally which prevents it from transfering engine heat to the coolant. Remove it and have it 're-cored'. One of these steps will solve the problem.

Te water pump is located in the timing belt area, behind the timing covers. it's ran off the timing belt it self. The timing belt and balncer belt must be removed.(both belts and tensioners should be replaced at the same time due to access and the fact you have to remove them anyways) get a haynes Book it will give you the proper removal procedures NOTE: ---VERY IMPORTANT---- the timing must be kept in spec 100% or SEVERE damage to your engine will happen!! It depends on your geographic location, but generally it should be anywhere from $75 - $150 labor. A large automotive shop/dealer could be as high as $300 for labor. And of course companies will mark up the water pump 75% - 150% as well.

If you have the slightest mechanical knowledge and a small ratchet set, it would would be very inexpensive to fix yourself.

Just remove the water reservoir and access the pump directly below the alternator. Get a new gasket with the pump and you will need to unbolt the pulley from the old pump and attach it to the new pump. Then replace the serpentine belt.

It will cost you around $40 - $60 and an hour of your time.

Usually a bad water pump leaks coolant from the weep hole just below the pulley. This is the number one indicator of water pump failure. Otherwise, if it is overheating, that may also be a cause if the fins are worn out.

Usually these are symptoms of a blown Head Gasket or a critical seal beteen the coolant channels in the engine and the cylinders. What the white smoke means is that water has gotten into a cylinder and is being turned to steam as the piston fires. Whoever did the work probably did not reseal the system correctly and you have water or coolant in the cylinders. If you get enough water into the cylinders the engine cannot start because the cylinders cannot fire properly. I hope this answers your question sufficiently. ----

Remove the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu washer tank supply hose. Remove the windshield washer tank retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new windshield washer tank.

It's a real pain in the neck. You have to remove your timing belt cover, and fan belts just to get to the pump bolts. Once you get all of that off then you can get to the pump. You'll have to remove the pump pulley before you can remove it. I'd suggest you loosen the bolts holding the pulley on before you take anything else loose. Once you have them loose, you can proceed with taking the belts off and then all of the timing cover bolts and the harmonic balancer. Of course you know to drain the radiator before you start. The big bolt on the harmonic balancer is a 17mm in case you're wondering. That is if you have the 1.3 four cylinder. This is if you have the 1.0 three cylinder.

Unload alternator. Remove crank pulley from underneath. Remove timing belt cover. Remove timing belt. I've read that this is an interference design engine. Putting the timing belt on wrong could slam the valves into the pistons when you start it. This is a great time to replace the timing belt

On my Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v engine. The thermostat was on the left hand side of the engine behind the rear timing belt cover were the coolant hose leaves the engine to the radiator. hope this helps

Find the cause and repair the problem. You may also have to replace the foam rubber matting since it would be prone to mold if it has been wet and not completely dried out.
