Car Starting Problems

The grease in the ignition becomes 'frozen' in the colder weather. When you insert the key and turn, it triggers the anti-theft system. The 'solution' to this problem is to keep a lighter in your car and heat the key up BEFORE you insert and turn to start the engine. If you trigger the anti-theft system, you are going to have to wait 10 minutes for it to reset. Another problem could be in the ignition switch The switch contains the anti-theft logic and is suseptible to moisture This is a very common problem. If your security light flashes when it won't start it's your problem for sure Also if you have the codes checked it will have B2960 and B3033 in the body control module history

could be the alternator. could be the battery, the alternator charges the battery but does not stop the battery holding a charge.could also be a bad starter motor. take alternator off and have it tested. most places will test for free

You can try drying it with a hair blow dryer. If that does not work then heat your oven to 150 degrees and leave it in there overnight. If that does not work you will need to replace it.

bad starter. Hit it with a hammer lightly while anothe person turns the key. suggestion, replace the starter.

Could be a number of things... bad air filter, fouled spark plugs, weak fuel pump...

I get no fuel to the injectors don't hear the pump prime and if I connect power directly to the pump and get pressure to the fuel rails, no injectors are opening when I crank,,, I am getting sparks, how can I check if it is the ECU broken or the big fuel relay at the firewall?,, or is there some other problems, this engine was rebuilt by previous owner and he put the electiric in a mess, put wrong firing order(fixed that), put on new headers which was wrong and it has no oxygen sensor, (will it not run if the oxygen sensor is not hooked up? )

I will put original manifolds on and oxygen sensor soon...

can bad maf sensor ruin the ECU...? previous owner told me he thougth the maf sensor was bad....

If you mean theft system activated, it can only be reset through computer by an auto locksmith or dealer. If light flashes when key is on, theft was detected. If light is not on and you have no fuel at schrader valve on rail- you can try inertia switch for fuel.

In order to determine the problem, we will need more information about your vehicle. Information such as the year, make, and model, would be helpful. However, as a general answer, here are my remarks: A vehicle that is fuel injected, either with a TBI (Throttle Body Injection) or PFI (Port Fuel Injection), relies on several sensors to determine how much fuel needs to be supplied to the engine in order to start. Two very important sensors in particular are the coolant temperature sensor and the air temperature sensor. If a sensor sends a 'warm' signal to your vehicles computer, then the computer will assume the car has been running and not inject much fuel at all. If the sensor was unplugged, then the computer would inject too much fuel. If the vehicle is carbureted, a common reason for cold start failure is the choke which is also known as a choke coil. Since there is no onboard computer to give the car more fuel in cold weather, the solution is to reduce the amount of oxygen that is supplied to the engine. When operational, the bi-metal choke relies on temperature to expand and contract. When it does this, the choke coil linkage pulls or pushes a metal plate, sometimes called a butterfly, covering the air intake of the carburetor. After time the choke coil will lose it thermostatic properties and fail to push or pull the linkage. In short, check your carbureted vehicle when cold. The butterfly over the carburetor should be closed. If your vehicle is fuel injected, you will likely need to test or replace the air and/or collant temperature sensor. -- JJohnson

Blowing black smoke is indicative of an oil leak in the engine.

Usually in a vehicle the ignition switch will contain four postions. This includes the On postion, off, start, and accessories. Although some standard cars may only contain 2 positions being the on and off.

Let it set it should start. If not your vehicle is equiped with an anti-theft system, it may be malfunctioning. The Passlock Anti-Theft on all GM vehicles will disable the fuel injectors if it thinks the vehicle is being stolen. This could hapen if you changed keys or the sensor in the ignition cylinder is bad. This would give you the same effect as if the vehicle was flooded. It might start for a few seconds, then die. Try the reset method below. Reset Method or the Passlock 2 system, put the key in the ignition and turn the engine over (the car should not start, if it did you are done), turn the key to the ON position, let it set for 10 fmin. The security light should be flashing. After 10 min. the security light should stop flashing the car is ready to learn the new key value. Turn the key off, wait 5 seconds, and then try to start the car.

it sounds like it might be the cam sensor in the injection pump.

check fuel cut off switch or ground wire by battery small wire on neg side of battery cable or fuel and eec relays under hood

Check the MAP sensor.

each electrode sticking up out of the top of the distributer cap that you attach the plug and coil wires to, is called a tower. So a distributer cap will have more than one tower. If it has a center one, that will be the coil wire tower, and the ones surrounding it in a circle will be the plug wire towers.

The gas you left in the carborator has turned into bubble gum..shut the fuel off and remove the carb..spry it with carb cleaner....and while you have the gas line off the carb...drain the tank and start with fresh fuel...check your oil and next year put fuel stabilizer in it at the end of the year... Dont do it at the end of the year....each time you buy gas for your lawn & garden equipment,always use stabilizer, always, you never know when is going to be the last time you are going to use it for the season, and gas only has a 30 day shelf life...only ! Stabilizer or not, if I don't plan on using gasoline-operated lawn and garden equipment for at least 30 days, I drain the fuel tank and then run the motor until all the gas is gone. The way I see it, no gas = no problem.

No. With electronic fuel injection on today's cars, the fuel system gets fully charged when you turn the ignition key to the on position. This is true whether you are starting a car parked overnight or one that has been run recently.

Well to start with the question is a bit vague. A pulley has nothing to do with

a start operation; a loose pulley may cause the belt not to turn fast enough to charge the battery and that's as far as it goes.

Check your belt tension. If loose tighten it. That's All

yep bad starters but a lot of the trouble is caused by the two part flywheel which has anti shock springs in it if they are gone it will eat starters but worse can damage the gearbox too the best cure if this is the case ford still sell the old type solid flywheel for the new vans and this cures the problem just google flywheel transit and you will find a lot of sites with unhappy ford transit customers but other than that they don't give much other trouble

Icing inside the intake? Had that happen on my old I6 Ford. You could scrape ice off the outside of the intake...I'd heat it with a torch and would instantly be fine. Just a thought.

not turning on could be flat battery, bad igniton switch, bad safety switch, bad starter motor,bad stater solenoid
