Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

What would let the starter stay engageed after the key is off starter and solenoid are both new 6cy 4WD 1991 Ford F150?

a bad battery will do this. also make sure the correct shims are used in installation and that the number of teeth on flywheel and starter both match. either of these can make starter hangup and not disengage

Bad battery - won't take a charge? Defective alternator not charging battery Check with a voltmeter Without engine running reading should be Approx. 12.8 With engine running (alternator charging) reading should be 13.8 - 14.2 volts

I own a 2006 Toyota corolla. About 2 months ago I got a remote start installed on the car.Its been working fine I tried starting the car and it wont work with the key only the remote start. any ideas?

When they installed the remote starter they cut your starter wire and wired in a "starter kill" function. When they connected the key side and the starter side to the alarm they didn't make a good connection on the key side and that wire came loose. If it is a directed electronics product ie. Viper then its a thick green wire that should be accompanied by a purple, pink, red, and orange thick wires. Find the wire that the purple is hooked up to, note the wire color and find that green wire comming from your remote start system and reconnect it to the other side of the starter wire.

Turning the key wont start the motor you can make the starter turn connecting the two wires at the solenoid sometimes it will run most times it won't This is a 1992 cadillac 4.9?

Check the negative battery connection to the frame. If this is faulty, starting will be intermittent at best. Check the negative battery connection to the frame. If this is faulty, starting will be intermittent at best.

How do you remove the ignition barrel on an 87 Ford Laser?

Remove the steering column surround and you should see a black round thing on the left hand side, this is the ignition switch. Remove this and you will see there is one screw holding the ignition barrel on, remove and you then need to insert your key and turn it to the ACC position. you should now be able to withdraw the barrel using the key but take care not to snap the key off in the barrel

What is going on when your security light for a 1997 olds achieva stays on and car won't start?

Oldsmobile Passlock Security SystemFrom the Oldsmobile Achieva owner's manual:

Passlock (TM)

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.

Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. The system is armed once the key is removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled.

During normal operation, the SECURITY light will go off after the engine is started. If the engine stalls and the SECURITY light flashes, wait until the light stops flashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release the key from the START position as soon as the engine starts. If you are driving and the SECURITY lights comes on, you will be able to restart the engine if you turn the engine off. However, your Passlock system is not working properly and must be serviced by your retailer. Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. You may also want to check the fuse or circuit breaker. See your Oldsmobile retailer for service.

If the SECURITY light comes on while the engine is running, a problem has been detected and the system may need service. See your dealer for service.

Note: my Achieva has a 'bypass' switch located in plain sight on the lower side of the dash near the hood release latch. I have had to push that button while trying to start the car. I did not have the remote on that key chain. If you have a remote, make sure the batteries are fresh and try to resynchronize the remote to the vehicle following this procedure:

Synchronization

Your Remote Lock Control system is equipped with a security system that prevents anyone from recording and playing back your signal. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the receiver. The receiver will not respond to a signal that has been sent to it more than once. To resynchronize your transmitter and receiver, follow these directions:

1. Stand close to your vehicle

2. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter at the same time.

3. Hold the buttons for five seconds. In this time, the doors should lock and unlock once. This confirms the resynchronization. If the doors do not lock and unlock, see you retailer for service.

why don't you do just what i did? disable the security! nobodys going to steal an achieva anyway unless they are crazy then they would probably bring it back! lol take off the cover to the steering column. look on the passengers side of the column and you will see 3 small 20 gauge wires, yellow, white, and black. cut the yellow wire. problem solved! security is now disabled. your security light on the dash will stay on all the time now when running but isn't that better than paying hunderds of dollars for maybe nothing? I know this works cause i had to do it on my 97 achieva. Good luck

Why does a 1996 Oldsmobile ciera SL car stalls while running and starts back up?

If it is stalling when putting it into gear but not while idleing I would check your mass air flow sensor. It may need to be cleaned or replaced. If it is stalling when putting it into gear but not while idleing I would check your mass air flow sensor. It may need to be cleaned or replaced.

How do you know if a 95 dodge neon has jumped time I replaced the fuel pump water pump and timing belt on my car and it ran for about a month now it won't start at all?

After 1972 volkswagon beetle running fine all day when we got home it will not start. key doesn't seem to do anything it has a new battery. Could there be a trick with the ignition?

check your battery post terminals for good clean connection. If no problem there then you might have a bad generator. Your generator might not be charging your battery. If you installed a new battery and ran your bug all day chances are that your engine was running off of the battery which was not being recharged by your generator. As soon as you turned off your engine and tried to re-start it, your battery did not have enough juice to crank the engine over. Good luck.

What are the symptoms of defective ignition module?

A bad ignition module is usually characterized by several frustrating symptoms. A classic example is when the engine will start, but when it gets hot, the ignition module's electrical properties change, cuasing the car to die suddenly, but restart after several minutes of cooling. Some people have reported pouring cold water on the ignition module causes it to start when hot (mearly by cooling rapidly). Another way to test for this is to allow the engine to run for a total of 30 minutes, then gently tap the module with the back of a screwdriver. If the car fails, this is usually the source. Sometimes the car will not start at all, but this should lead to checking the ignition coil first. This is usually characterized by no spark, no combustion, but good power (or weak power) into the ignition coil. This is usually checked first, as both are common problems, but the ignition coil is usually 1/3 the price (or less) of the (often very pricey) modules (especially for later models). Basically, check for spark, if you dont have any, keep going back until you have checked the ignition coil, distibutor, ignitor, module (in that order) and any grounds, resistors, capacitors, etc. Check all for power in, out, positive, negative, and power out. Use a test light, a voltmeter (multimeter) and get a book for your car from the auto parts store.

Or take it to AutoZone- they can test modules using a computer for FREE.

Where is the starter on a 1992 Plymouth sundance?

Allmost all starters are situated next to the engine block and are bolted into the transmission case with either two or three large bolts (usually 9/16") In your case the starter is behind the engine block (I am assuming that you have a four cylinder) on the transmission side, underneath the intake manifold. Your starter would be a three bolt type with one of these actually being a stud and nut. don't let its position scare you, the bolts are easy to get at once the "L" shaped intake hose is removed. Please be advised that the only way to truly be safe while working on a starting and charging problem is to remove the ground side battery terminal from its post.

What causes an 94 XJ6 not to start sometimes and then after waiting about ten minutes the car starts?

Answer - defective fuel pump?I had a similar problem with my XJ6 and it eventully turned out to be a faulty fuel pump - but that only partially soved the problem - the next owner of the car discovered that the crankshaft sensor had an intermittent fault! Hope that this is of some use.

could also be lose wire on the ignition coil. i had this intermittantly for six months be solving, also, try moving gear lever into D, then back to park. occasionly the car can register being in gear and wont attempt to start

Help seem like you are getting no gas to the back two cylinders 89 2.4 tbi runs horrible have checked everything possible fire fuel spark you name you have checked it any help would be appreciated se?

If you are not getting gas in only 2 cylindars with throtle body injection it means the valves are not opening. I suspect the lobes are gone on the camshaft. That's about the only thing that is going to affect just 2 cylinders in this way. At least as far as I know.

How do you reset a fuel cut off switch manually?

Before you reset the fuel pump, make sure to read all of the following instructions!!!!! ****** MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GAS IN YOUR TANK! IF IT IS EMPTY, THE FUEL PUMP MIGHT NOT NEED TO BE RESET, IT ****** ****** MIGHT ONLY NEED TO BE PRIMED, PUT AT LEAST TWO GALLONS IN THE TANK AND SKIP TO "Step 4". ****** 1.) Look for an access panel in the trunk, driver's side; it might even be labeled "Fuel Pump Reset". 2.) Open the compartment and press the red button. This should reset the pump. 3.) At this point it might be a good idea to "burp" the fuel tank. This will probably be the easiest thing you do all day! Just pop the cover and unscrew the gas cap, this will release any preasure built up inside the tank. As long as you're in a controled environment, go ahead and leave the cap open until you finish "Step 4". Otherwise "burp" it a couple of times while you're priming the lines. 4.) The next step is to prime the pump. In other words, make sure there is enough gas in the fuel lines to start the car. The easiest way to do this is by turning the key back and forth from the "OFF" to the "ON" position. *** Be sure not to turn all the way to the "START" position until you have performed "Step 4", at least 3 or 4 times. If you attempt to start the car before the fuel pump is properly primed, you will run a serious risk of burning out the pump. This could lead to even more costly repairs!!! 5.) Replace the gas cap before attempting ignition. 6.) Once you have reset the pump, burped the tank, primed the fuel lines, and replaced the gas cap; you should be all set! Go ahead and give it a crank, good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where is the starter on a 94 cavalier?

It's just under the front of the car. It looks like a big cylinder with 2 long bolts through it. Unhook the battery first, then disconnect the terminals from the cylinoid which is bolted to the top of the starter. Remember where they go!! Then Unscrew the 2 long bolts and be careful because the starter is really heavy. Then lower it out while making sure it does not wreck the teeth of the flywheel. Hope this helps!

Does a Toyota Previa have fuelpump reset switch?

No but the pump runs only when air enters the Mass Air Flow meter. In other words the Mass Air Flow turns on the fuel pump.

What causes the starter to not turn when the key is turned on a 91 GEO Prizm?

Make sure the starter is getting voltage. If it is, perhaps the starter is bad. If it isn't, maybe your ignition switch is shot.
